About the role

The Early Career Development Program (ECDP) is a two-year program in which participants will have the opportunity to gain valuable design and field engineering experience. As part of the Program, you will be required to visit our plant sites, as needed. Expected travel is about 25%. Candidates are required to have a Bachelor’s degree. Ideal candidates will be new or recent grads, with up to 2 years of relevant experience. For a list of additional qualifications, please refer to the Requirements section below.

The Engineer I, Early Career Development Program (ECDP), will be a member of the Mechanical Engineering team within the Corporate Engineering function. The team’s scope covers Design and Plant Support Engineering for all technical aspects of the Thermomechanical Treatment process at nearly 40 facilities across North America. This includes boilers, combustion and steam generation systems, turbine, balance of plant auxiliaries, air pollution control systems, emissions control, refuse and ash handling systems as well as supporting electrical and control systems.

The Engineer I, ECDP role provides design and operations engineering support to Thermomechanical Treatment Facilities (TTFs) across the fleet, including operations and maintenance support as well as equipment replacement and upgrade projects.  The Engineering Development Program provides exposure to plant systems as well as engineering activities through performing tasks at increasing levels of responsibility and independence against a set of technical development outcomes under the guidance and mentorship of subject matter experts and engineering professionals.

This role includes regular travel to facilities to gain onsite exposure, technical development, and support engineering tasks.

Key responsibilities, deliverables and expectations:

  • Design Engineering: supports engineering scope development and execution as part of plant capital improvement projects.  This includes the collection and review of plant technical information, review and development of piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&ID’s), Electrical Single Line drawings, plant modification option evaluation, concept development including Mechanical, Electrical and Controls design calculations, concept layout sketches and/or drawing development, request for vendor proposal(s). specification development, bid evaluation support, design review, construction inspections and commissioning support.

  • Plant Support Engineering: Support engineering activities at facilities including troubleshooting, field services work, Shutdown/Outage inspections on various Engineered systems, equipment condition assessments, plant performance testing, incident investigations and general troubleshooting.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution is required.

Experience: 0 to 2 years of experience in an engineering role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze data to identify trends is required.

  • Effective written, oral, and presentation skills.

  • The Engineer I will initially work under direct guidance and supervision of more experienced engineers but is expected to work independently with minimal direction within 2 years of post-qualification work experience.<
