About you and this role
Provides comprehensive indirect tax services (i.e., compliance, accounting, and planning) to US subsidiaries with heavy manufacturing footprint in TX, LA, and MI. Provides technical leadership to Indirect Tax staff while providing operational and strategic oversight of all sales and use tax, excise tax, and unclaimed property tax compliance and audits and controversy. This position requires a sharp, analytical, and strategic thinker who is hands-on and can take charge of projects, resolve issues effectively and creatively while maintaining flexibility, professionalism, and integrity, and is able to develop relationships and collaborate cross-functionally to achieve the indirect tax value to the organization.
You will manage sales and use tax, excise tax, and unclaimed property accuracy and lead transformation efforts to improve efficiency and accuracy. Oversee account reconciliations for all indirect tax accounts within your scope, ensuring accuracy and compliance and providing commentary and variance analysis during close, and ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting. Manage Indirect Tax SOX reporting and maintain strong internal controls. Work closely with management to ensure the Company’s FAS 5 reserves are adequate.
You will provide guidance on continuous improvements and streamlining processes toward establishing organizational best practices. Establish and maintain strong relationships with tax authorities and external advisors. Manage Indirect Tax audits and inquiries, negotiate with tax authorities, and resolve tax disputes. Support tax policy by monitoring changes to tax legislation and communicating implications to the organization. Support and advise on other matters as necessary, including on transactions, planning and other matters that may be examined on audit. Mentor and develop team members and identify opportunities for technical growth.
Responsibilities
- Applies in-depth knowledge of Regional Generally Accepted Account Principles (GAAP) in order to provide a complete, comprehensive, and accurate tax compliance or analysis position
- Coordinates the Team’s completion of tax queries and facilitates a timely and professional completion of an audit
- Proposes legal restructuring and implements with project manager if accepted by management
- Maintains transfer pricing responsibility for any Regional transaction while making sure policy is being followed
- Identifies key risks in area and develops the framework to mitigate, and adapts plans of execution to address resource and operational challenges
- Acts accountable for internal controls in designated area by setting priorities and coordinating work for the Team
- Drafts or coordinates the company’s responses to audit inquiries from tax authorities and facilitates the timely and professional completion of an audit
- Applies knowledge of the tax law, consulting with tax counsel and advisors as necessary, and in-depth knowledge of U.S. GAAP principles to solve problems and provide complete and accurate analysis of tax positions
- Supports and advises on other matters as necessary, including on transactions, planning and other matters that may be examined on audit
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or other related discipline
- 10+ years’ of indirect tax experience with increasing responsibilities in public accounting, large corporate tax department, or combination
- Expert knowledge of sales and use tax, excise tax, transaction tax, gross receipts tax, and technical concepts
- Experience managing state audits and controversy and direct interaction with tax auditors
- Experience managing 3rd party advisor relationships
- Proficiency in SAP, OneSource, Avelera, and other tax engines/products and experience implementing indirect tax technology solutions and best practice tools (i.e., dashboard, analytics, and reporting tools, etc.)
