The Transportation Summer 2025 Internship provides a unique opportunity to gain experience across Bridge Inspection, Highway, and Roadway sectors—all within one summer!
About the Transportation Business Unit
Service Groups: Bridge Inspection, Highway, Roadway
The Transportation Business Unit provides transportation engineering services for all project types and scopes, from the largest interstate systems to local township roads. Some of the services provided include roadway and intersection design, corridor improvements, bridge replacement and rehabilitation, and environmental documentation. Our highway and roadway engineers work collaboratively with our Southeast Bridge Inspection Group to deliver innovative, cost-effective, and long-term transportation solutions. Bridge inspectors serve a valuable and needed service in public safety and is an exciting way to see new places, explore areas unavailable to the general public, and a great opportunity for the outdoor enthusiast.
What You'll Do:
- Assist with Roadway Geometric Design and Plan preparation.
- Assist with Drainage Design and Plan preparation.
- Assist with inspections in the field, entry of field data in into specialized software, entry of data into Microsoft Word/Excel/Access, assembly of reports and other documents.
- Willingness to operate with proper training, access equipment (man-lift, snoopers, boats, etc.)
- Undertake diverse design assignments, progressively assuming more responsibility under the guidance of a department manager.
- Support technical staff on day-to-day projects, providing valuable assistance.
- Gain exposure to all organizational levels, including interactions with senior leadership.
- Receive ongoing guidance and feedback from mentors and managers aligned with our core competencies to support your growth.
What You'll Bring:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
- Experience with MicroStation or AutoCAD, and familiarity with OpenRoad Designer is preferred but not required
- Detail-oriented with strong technical skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to perform fieldwork, including carrying ladders and gear, working at heights, climbing, and in various weather conditions
- Willingness to travel out of town for inspections; mileage and travel expenses will be reimbursed
- Fast learner with attention to detail and the ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Strong verbal and communication skills
