Job Description

In this role, you will be responsible for leading the specification, architecture, and design of electrical and electronic hardware for complex medical instruments in a multi-disciplinary environment. You will have the opportunity to work on a diverse set of product development efforts.

This is a highly advanced level and/or lead position which requires the regular application of acknowledged expertise in the electrical engineering field and the use of considerable initiative and creativity.  The incumbent provides significant technical leadership in design and development projects, and in the preparation of technical proposals.  Project leadership for large technical proposals and programs requires substantial coordination with internal resources and customer sources of information, oversight of the work of other engineers, and may involve representing the company where a high level of technical credibility is required.  Provides expert explanations, techniques, or approaches to colleagues, management, and customers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and supervisory leadership over complex, major design and development projects. Assumes responsibility for successful completion (schedule, performance, cost) of systems and sub-systems.
  • Originate and communicate concepts which could lead to new projects. Develop potential applications to exploit new business opportunities.
  • Produce innovative technical solutions to customer’s problems.
  • Responsible for carrying out specific engineering project technical assignments as part of larger program objectives in the design and development of products, test equipment, or processes.
  • Plan and lead experiments to evaluate operating characteristics of products or processes. Translate experimental results into design criteria.
  • Participate in the determination of design requirements. Recommend design architecture. Determine design feasibility, evaluate design alternatives, and select optimal design approach. Consult with other engineering personnel to resolve complex design alternatives. Collaborate with the project team to solve complex technical problems, resolve design issues, and manage risk (technical and hazards). Maintain liaisons with other departments.
  • Plan, lead, or conduct experiments/tests to evaluate operating characteristics of breadboards, prototypes, products, or processes. Translate experimental results into design criteria.
  • Develop requirements, specifications, schematics, simulations (where applicable), assembly drawings, bills of material, and material cost estimates. Integrate electrical and electronic components. Specify the design of cables and cable harness assemblies. Utilize electronic design tools such as schematic capture and PCB layout to design PCBAs. Work with service bureaus and suppliers on PCB layout, fabrication, assembly, and other design/test activities. Determine appropriate components, materials, and processes for specific applications. Develop FPGAs and PLDs, using HDL.
  • Conduct computer simulations to analyze and test designs.
  • Ensure component reliability based on technical evaluation of suppliers’ specifications, designs, and manufacturing processes.
  • Develop reliability models for electrical, electronic, electromechanical, and electro-optical sub-assemblies and assemblies.
  • Review and implement Design-for-Manufacturing (DFM) and Design-for-Test (DFT) objectives.
  • Evaluate, analyze, and review designs to assure technical soundness. Review and approve completed design work.
  • Prepare technical documents and reports. Prepare system, sub-system, and module performance specifications. Prepare engineering specifications for major component purchases. Design and evaluate engineering breadboards and prototypes, and translate experimental results into design criteria.
