This role will require about 10-15% of travel to enhance collaboration and ensure successful completion of projects.

Are you an experienced manufacturing engineer with a passion for driving innovation and supporting new product introductions (NPI)? Medtronic’s Spine Operating Unit is seeking a Principal Manufacturing Engineer to join our team at the Warsaw, IN site. In this role, you will play a critical part in designing and optimizing manufacturing processes to ensure efficiency, quality, and compliance in the production of life-changing medical devices.

As a Principal Manufacturing Engineer, you’ll lead efforts to design production layouts, develop sequences of operations, and adapt equipment to factory conditions while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams. You’ll also oversee machinery and equipment performance, implement statistical process controls, and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements. Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Designs manufacturing processes, procedures and production layouts for assemblies, equipment installation, processing, machining and material handling.

  • Designs arrangement of machines within plant facilities to ensure most efficient and productive layout.

  • Designs sequence of operations and specifies procedures for the fabrication of tools and equipment and other functions that affect product performance.

  • Adapts machine or equipment design to factory and production conditions.

  • May incorporate inspection and test requirements into the production plan.

  • Inspects performance of machinery, equipment, and tools to verify their efficiency, and investigates and initiates corrective action of problems and deficiencies to ensure product quality.

  • Develops manufacturing processes that are applicable to statistical process control, and may develop those techniques.

  • Provides guidance to engineering regarding design concepts and specification requirements to best utilize equipment and manufacturing techniques.

  • Ensures processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience

OR

  • Master's degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

OR

  • PhD with 3 years relevant experience.

Nice to Have

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in engineering or a related field.

  • Metallurgical background with expertise in material properties and applications.

  • Knowledge of materials such as titanium and cobalt chrome, with experience in implementing new technologies being transferred to the site.

  • Proficiency with CNC controls, including mills and lathes, with the ability to analyze and optimize processes from a design perspective.

  • Experience in handling and installing capital equipment, with a focus on adopting and integrating new technologies into production.

  • Strong understanding of process controls and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Hands-on experience with validation processes and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles.

  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate across teams, including shop floor staff, development engineers, quality engineers, and senior management.

  • Proven ability to collect and relay feedback between manufacturing teams and development or quality teams to drive improvements.

  • A proactive, “can-do” attitude with demonstrated resilience and the ability to overcome challenges in high-pressure situations.

  • Experience working in a growing or transitioning site environment, with adaptability to shifting priorities.

  • Familiarity with supporting contract manufacturers or suppliers, including local visits and coordination.
