A Day in the Life of a Project Engineer

You are at the forefront of brainstorming creative solutions for challenging projects. You will support an interdisciplinary team as the technical lead to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure design in a wide range of contexts from roadway reconstructions and streetscapes in highly urban settings to signature trail projects in suburban and rural areas that highlight and enhance the natural environment. Your role as technical lead will include the use of civil engineering design software (MicroStation and/or AutoCAD) as well as the training of younger staff. You will manage projects through concept development, design review, bid package development, permitting, and construction management. You will help develop construction documents; and ensure that our projects are consistently of the highest quality.

You will be at the table with clients and colleagues from a variety of disciplines, delivering project ideas from concept to construction. You take part in stakeholder and public outreach, developing feasibility studies and concept plans, and preparing construction documents for innovative projects throughout the country. You participate in business development pursuits in your home region as well as across our Southeast and North American offices. Qualifications of a Project Engineer:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering
  • Professional Engineering license
  • 6+ years of industry experience
  • A broad knowledge base in civil engineering with a transportation focus, street design, and development of concept drawings
  • Specific knowledge of horizontal and vertical roadway geometric design (MUTCD and AASHTO)
  • Proficiency in the use of CADD design software for 2-D and 3-D design tasks using one or more of the following: MicroStation (InRoads or OpenRoads), AutoCAD (Civil 3D)
  • Experience developing construction documents and cost estimates
  • Interest in multimodal transportation issues and design (specifically for bicycle, pedestrian, Safe Routes to School, Complete Streets, Vision Zero, and/or transit integration)
