Iona University’s STEP program is seeking dynamic and enthusiastic graduate students to serve as instructors for our three-week engineering summer camp. This camp is designed for middle school and high school students, with a focus on robotics and drone applications. Our mission is to empower underrepresented students by providing them with hands-on experiences and exposure to cutting-edge engineering technologies. In this compensated role, you will leverage your robotics project experience to guide small groups of students through lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on activities using platforms such as programmable mini-size quadrotor drones and Lego Mindstorms.
Key Responsibilities:
- Instruction & Curriculum Delivery:
- Conduct engaging lectures and interactive sessions on robotics principles, drone applications, and related engineering topics.
- Lead hands-on lab sessions, guiding students through practical exercises using robotics platforms (e.g., quadrotor drones, Lego Mindstorms).
- Adapt teaching methods to suit a diverse group of K-12 students, ensuring content is accessible and inspiring.
- Student Engagement & Support:
- Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment for approximately 10 students per class.
- Mentor and encourage students, helping them develop problem-solving and teamwork skills.
- Provide clear, effective communication and feedback to students during instructional sessions.
- Program Collaboration:
- Work closely with the camp coordinator and fellow instructors to plan and refine session content.
- Assist with pre-camp preparation, including classroom setup, material preparation, and demonstration rehearsals.
- Participate in staff meetings and training sessions prior to and during the camp.
- Safety & Administration:
- Ensure a safe and orderly classroom environment in compliance with university policies.
- Maintain attendance records and assist in the documentation of student progress.
- Support any additional administrative tasks as needed by camp organizers.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a graduate program (Master’s or PhD) in engineering, robotics, computer science, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in robotics projects, such as research or hands-on work in robotics-related applications.
- Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to explain complex technical concepts in simple, accessible terms.
- Prior experience working with K-12 students or a strong interest in educational outreach.
- A collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively in small team settings.
- Availability for the full duration of the camp during July 2025.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior teaching, tutoring, or workshop facilitation experience.
- Familiarity with programmable mini-size quadrotor drones and Lego Mindstorms platforms.
- A passion for mentoring and promoting STEM among underrepresented groups.
Compensation:
This is a paid position. Compensation details will be provided upon selection and are competitive within the industry standards for graduate-level instructors.
