About the Role

In order to achieve its ambition of serving 80,000-100,000 Fellows over the next decade, Braven is hiring a Director, Planning & Grants who will serve as a trusted resource, leader, and collaborator across the organization on various Finance and Accounting related topics.

As a member of the Finance team, within the People & Operations department, you will lead several work streams within Finance and Accounting, including annual budgeting and forecasting, revenue recognition, and grant accounting management for 100+ restricted grants that provide the valuable financial resources for the organization.

This role is on the Finance Team and reports directly to the Controller. This role could have a direct report in the coming years.

What You’ll Do

Revenue & Grants Management - 40%

  • Record all revenue of a $25M+ non-profit, including donations, earned revenue, and other miscellaneous revenue items, including reviewing grant agreements for restrictions and contingencies.
  • Manage the restricted net assets, including 100+ grants with restrictions, and accurately track the expenses tied to those funds.
  • Financial reporting for donors, grant proposals, grant applications, grant renewals, and general grant reporting as requested by the External Affairs team and external partners.
  • Record bank deposit activity related to revenue.

Budgeting & Forecasting - 50%

  • Hold budget meetings throughout the year with each department and update the fiscal year projections based on revised projections to the annual budget, making sure that Braven understands its projected expenses and variances to budget throughout the year.
  • Act as a key business partner to department heads so that departments can understand their budgets and financial policies and provide ad hoc analysis and finance team support to departments as needed.
  • Play a leading role with the Controller through the annual budgeting cycle by delivering reporting, prior year(s) analytics, Martus system support, and project management towards completion at the yearly board presentation.

Other Finance Operations - 10%

  • Maintain the cash flow analysis and manage cash balances of the organization, including reviewing balances to ensure adequate balances in accounts to fund operations.
  • Ad hoc projects such as implementing new expense reimbursement platforms and other Finance-related systems and projects, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
  • 5 years of experience in Accounting, Finance, or other related field
  • 3+ years of non-profit experience, specifically comfortable with net assets with donor restrictions and grants management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity and knowledge of accounting principles/theories (GAAP, FASB)
  • Significant experience working with Google Suite, Microsoft Office (strong Excel skills), and Salesforce
  • Team player and business partner who demonstrates the ability to work in a collegial, collaborative, and fast-paced organization
  • Strong listening skills, empathy, patience, and the ability to lead through influence and by example
  • Effective project, time, process, and people management skills which enables them to manage multiple, changing priorities and initiatives, and to “get things done” in a timely manner
