The Pharmacy Technician – Inpatient supports a 24/7 inpatient pharmacy serving a nearly 500-bed hospital with specialized services including cardiology, obstetrics, and a Level III NICU. As part of a collaborative team of more than 50 pharmacy technicians, caregivers rotate through a variety of operational responsibilities that support safe and timely medication distribution throughout the hospital. Duties may include managing automated medication carousel systems, replenishing more than 125 Pyxis automated dispensing cabinets, delivering medications—including IV medications and controlled substances—to patient care areas, preparing liquid medications for neonatal and adult patients, compounding non-sterile medications, assisting in the IV clean room, and responding to medication-related calls from nurses and providers. This role is essential to maintaining efficient pharmacy operations while supporting high-quality patient care across multiple inpatient service lines.
This is a full-time role. A caregiver in this position will work five 8-hour evening shifts based on departmental needs. Shift times include 2:00pm–10:30pm, and 2:30pm–11:00pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Prepare medications through selecting, labeling, repacking, non-sterile compounding and sterile compounding.
- Deliver medications to the appropriate storage locations in an accurate and timely manner.
- Maintain accurate and appropriate inventories of medications and supplies and complete inventory audits, such as cycle counts and nursing unit inspections.
- Maintain a safe and clean work area by complying with procedures, rules and regulations, and document regulatory requirements such as temperature logs, scheduled activities and training.
- Use information systems, technology and automation to complete assigned tasks.
- Assist with the training of pharmacy caregivers and students.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High School Diploma/GED
- Upon hire, you must be a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcare Association (NHA).
- In addition to the above requirement, upon hire, it is required to hold an active registration through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (OBOP) as either a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician, or Pharmacy Technician Trainee
- Please note: Caregivers with active Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Registered Pharmacy Technician registrations are required to update their registration to a Certified Pharmacy Technician registration with the OBOP within 6 months
- Understanding of algebraic calculations necessary for the preparation of extemporaneous compounds
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Completion of a formal pharmacy technician training program
- Six months of hospital experience
