About the role

Summary

The Senior Operator / Foreman is responsible for leading daily marine dredging operations while actively operating dredging equipment. This role serves as the on-site operational lead, overseeing crew performance, safety compliance, production targets, and equipment condition. The position requires extensive hands-on dredging experience, strong leadership capability, and the ability to coordinate work in dynamic marine environments.

The pay rate for this position is $30-$40/hour.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate and oversee marine dredging equipment, which may include cutter suction dredges, hopper dredges, pumps, pipelines, excavators, loaders, and support vessels.
  • Direct and supervise dredging crews, assigning daily tasks and monitoring productivity.
  • Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for field operations during assigned shifts.
  • Monitor dredging progress and ensure work is performed according to project plans, specifications, and environmental permit requirements.
  • Conduct daily safety briefings and enforce compliance with company safety standards, OSHA regulations, USCG requirements, and site-specific safety plans.
  • Perform routine inspections of equipment and report mechanical issues, coordinating with maintenance personnel as needed.
  • Maintain accurate daily production reports, logs, and time records.
  • Ensure proper setup, operation, and breakdown of dredging systems and pipelines.
  • Identify operational issues and initiate corrective actions to minimize downtime.
  • Train and mentor operators and deck crew in safe work practices and equipment operation.
  • Participate in emergency response activities, including spill response and severe weather preparation.
  • Maintain good housekeeping on decks, barges, and work areas.
  • Support project leadership with planning, sequencing, and troubleshooting of dredging activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervise dredge operators, deckhands, laborers, and other assigned crew members. Responsible for enforcing performance expectations, safety standards, and work rules at the job site

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Seven (7) years of progressive experience in marine dredging operations.
  • Two (2) years in a lead operator, foreman, or supervisory role.
  • Proven experience operating dredges and related marine equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in remote or logistically complex marine environments.
  • Prior experience working under federal, state, or municipal dredging contracts.
  • TWIC Card (or ability to obtain).
  • USCG credentials or other maritime certifications.
  • Experience and knowledge of Alaska Native cultures.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent lifting, sitting, standing, stooping for prolonged periods of time, using hands/fingers requiring dexterity, should have good hand-eye coordination and motion control in coordination with handling tools, equipment, and other related components.
  • Reaching with hands and arms for items above and below sight level, talking, hearing, and seeing (up close, at a distance, along the periphery, with depth, color perception, and the ability to adjust focus); walking from place to place within the project location with occasional use of stairs and no elevator available; bending, pushing, pulling, and standing for up to 12 hours.
  • Frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds, such as small electrical components, equipment, and other materials.
