Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose of economic empowerment. The blocks that form our foundational teams — People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more — provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.

- Promote software engineering best practices (CI/CD, testing, code reviews, monitoring) within the team
- Define and drive data schema evolution, versioning, lineage, and governance practices
- Prioritize and manage roadmap, tradeoffs, execution plans, and dependencies within and across teams
- Influence and evangelize the data platform across the broader engineering organization, establishing standards and promoting adoption
- Partner with leadership on hiring, resourcing, performance management, and team culture, fostering an inclusive and high-performing environment
- Stay current on industry trends in data engineering, compute engines, storage formats – proposing innovations where applicable
You Have
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, plus 4+ years in a management role
- Deep hands-on experience in data engineering, ingestion and transformation pipelines (batch and streaming)
- Prior experience with medallion architecture, data lakehouse, delta lake, data lake, data warehouse designs
- Experience designing and operating large-scale data systems at high throughput and low latency
- Strong architectural judgment and ability to make tradeoffs across performance, scalability, maintainability, and cost
- Experience with observability, monitoring, error handling, retries, schema evolution, data quality, and lineage
