About the Department
 

The Center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS) provides the infrastructure to advance interdisciplinary research and training in health and social sciences at the University of Chicago. Housed under the Dean of the Biological Sciences Division's office, the Center attracts participation from across the University, including the Biological Sciences Division and Institute for Translational Medicine (ITM), the Center for Healthcare Delivery Science and Innovation (HDSI) at UChicago Medicine, Social Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Division, Business School, Harris School of Public Policy, Law School, Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice, National Opinion Research Center (NORC), and Argonne National Labs. The Center supports and promotes innovation and collaboration as well as excellence in research, scholarship, and training. With over 130 faculty associates from virtually all schools and divisions of the University, CHeSS serves as an incubator of ideas and supporter of research in health and the social sciences, sponsors seminars and workshops on campus, invites nationally-known scholars and policymakers to speak on a variety of topics, supports the writing and submission of grant applications and fundraising proposals, coordinates new research initiatives and projects, manages several training programs, and provides expert research methods consultation during formative and operational phases of investigations.

Job Summary
 

The Center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS) is seeking an Assistant Director of Training Programs and Communications. Reporting to the Director of Training Programs and Communications, the Assistant Director will oversee a portfolio of CHeSS-sponsored programs with a high degree of independence and support the design, day-to-day administration, and quality improvement for new and existing initiatives, which include federally and privately funded research training programs that target trainees at the undergraduate, postbaccalaureate, predoc, postdoc, and junior faculty levels. With guidance from the Director, the Assistant Director will collaborate with faculty and staff in the BSD and other University units to develop grant proposals, grant renewals, progress reports, and training program curricula; facilitate trainee-facing events; lead program evaluation efforts; and provide oversight for grant compliance and center-wide communications activities.

Programs in the CHeSS Training and Communications portfolio include:
•The Summer Program in Outcomes Research Training (SPORT), a seven-week summer program that offers training in health services research, data methods, and applications.
•Several NIH T32 and TL1 programs that collectively support ~20 pre and postdoctoral fellows each year: the NIA T32 Demography and Economics of Aging, the AHRQ T32 Health Services Research Program, the NCATS TL1 Postdoctoral Program in Clinical Research, Biomedical Informatics, and Health Equity.
•Several programs and grants that provide research training and education to medical students and/or dual degree students: the NIA T35 Short-Term Aging-related Research (STAR) Program, the NIDDK R25 Diabetes InqUiry Through a Learning Collaborative Experience (DULCE), and the MD/PhD Program in Medicine the Social Sciences and Humanities (MeSH), funded through the NIA T32 MD/PhD Program in Medicine, the Social Sciences, and Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias.
•The NIA P30 funded Center on Healthy Aging Behaviors and Longitudinal InvestigationS (CHABLIS) that provides research infrastructure development and pilot project funding for fellows, junior faculty, and trainees supported by NIA diversity supplements
•Two yearlong undergraduate programs: the Cultivating Health and Aging Researchers by Integrating Science, Medicine, and Aging (CHARISMA) and the Collegiate Translational Medicine Program (CTMP), which collectively support about 20 students per year.
•The Comprehensive Care, Community, and Culture (C4P) AmeriCorps State and National and AmeriCorps Seniors programs, administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services and funded through the federal AmeriCorps agency, that supports about 20 members per year completing service and training opportunities at UChicago, Ingalls, and Rush.
•Several ongoing workshops: the Outcomes Research Workshop (ORW), the Health Economics Workshop (HEW), the Will Manning Memorial Lecture, and the Regis J. Fallon Lecture in Health and Law.
•Academic coursework offered through the Committee on Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS).
•A suite of communications services and activities including: the CHeSS website as well as websites for several research studies and programs, a biweekly CHeSS newsletter, social media, and marketing
