Job Description:

Under the general supervision of a Laboratory Supervisor, the Registered Histotechnician supports the flow of anatomic pathology specimens, which may include tissue embedding, microtomy, frozen section cryotomy, and staining.

Job Essentials:

The Registered Histotechnician is a certified Histotechnician who organizes and manages the flow of anatomic pathology specimens through the laboratory, from specimen receipt through preparation of final diagnostic slides. In addition to Unregistered Histotechnician responsibilities, the Registered Histotechnician may provide training and orientation to new team members and assist with advanced instrument and specimen troubleshooting.

The Registered Histotechnician supports the laboratory QA program by monitoring indicators such as quality control, temperatures, and instrument failures. They also perform instrument maintenance and troubleshooting and take corrective action when standards are not met. Caregivers in this role may also assist with surgical pathology gross examination, dependent on education verification and site-specific competencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program within the last five years, or 60 semester hours or equivalent, including a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), or Associate degree with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both). Education will be verified by Quality Assurance Manager or Director.
  • Histotechnician ASCP certification, or equivalent


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years histology experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Interact with others requiring the employee to verbally communicate information.
  • Operate computers and complex and delicate lab equipment requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.
  • See and read lab equipment, monitors, and documents.
  • Remain sitting or standing for long periods of time to perform work on a computer or other equipment.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience. 

$25.58 - $39.49
