Scope of Position       

The Phlebotomist 2 will provide primary support to the Stefanie Spielman Breast Cancer Center (SSCBC) Outpatient Services Center, and secondary support to ancillary laboratory locations as needed. The Phlebotomist 2 job functions include but are not limited to specimen collection, specimen processing, and point of care/specimen testing (where applicable).

The SSCBC Laboratory provides comprehensive, time sensitive laboratory services to patients with a variety of diagnoses or admission/discharge criteria. The lab provides training for residents, new staff and medical technology students.  The laboratory is staffed 10 hours per day, Monday through Friday with hours varying according to workflow and holidays.

Position Summary    

The Phlebotomist 2 performs specimen collection by both venipuncture and capillary puncture, specimen labeling, and specimen processing.  Verifies accuracy and quality of specimens collected and dispatches specimens to appropriate testing locations and performs training of others in these techniques. Also performs test requisition entry, greets and directs patients through the lab and gathers complete patient information necessary to complete the registration and accessioning of all procedures done in the area. May also perform point of care testing; ensures accuracy of results and Quality Control measures by maintaining equipment and instruments. Follows policy for chain of custody record keeping for pre-employment urine drug screen collections.

Minimum Qualifications

For Hire:         High school diploma or GED is required. At least 1 year of relevant experience is required. Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification is preferred, but not required.

Ongoing:          Maintains certification status (if applicable); meets mandatory education and health surveillance requirements.  Demonstrates competence in technical, interpersonal, and cognitive skills required meeting essential job functions.
