Since 2009, PATH has provided significant technical assistance for LMIC HPV vaccination programs supported by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and in effective collaborations with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), among other partners. These activities include helping to generate scientific evidence to inform global policy guidelines around HPV vaccination, supporting country decision-making efforts to introduce HPV into their immunization programs, and leading planning, implementation and evaluation efforts to assess vaccination coverage as well as knowledge, attitudes and belief around HPV, HPV vaccination, and cervical cancer prevention. We have worked across multiple teams and focus areas including sexual and reproductive health, cervical cancer prevention, and health economics to develop a comprehensive and in-depth knowledge base to help countries introduce and sustain their HPV vaccination programs.

​​The intern will assist with two research activities to support the learning agenda for the HAPPI consortium, a collaborative group of HPV vaccination experts working to support country efforts to introduce HPV vaccination or strengthen and maintain existing programs.

​One research activity proposes to co-explore the learning question, “What strategies have countries adopted and implemented to reach OOS girls in low- and lower-middle income countries?” In response to this learning question, the intern will examine existing evidence about disparities in HPV vaccination between in-school and OOS girls, document strategies countries have used to reach OOS girls, and identifying evidence gaps.

​The second research activity will review countries who have switched from a two-dose to a one-dose vaccination schedule to better understand country implementation around a single-dose schedule switch (SDS), the intern will help gather and review documentation to determine the impact the policy change has had on key areas of HPV vaccine delivery, such as uptake and coverage, advocacy and communications, demand generation, and logistics.

​The following countries will be included in these research activites: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Gambia, Mauritania, Senegal, and Solomon Islands.

The overall objective of this internship is to gain familiarity and hands-on public health research experience, including conducting literature reviews and synthesizing findings. The intern will also develop skills in technical writing. ​​

The intern will gain experience with research focusing on public health in low and middle-income countries, literature review, synthesis of results, and scientific writing.​ 

Interested applicants should ideally have research experience in general, general knowledge of LMIC settings, and strong analytical skills.

This internship will need ~8 hours weekly dedicated to it and is based in Seattle, WA.
