About the role
The Director oversees and provides strategic leadership to all aspects of the Applied Education Program. Reporting to the chair of the Department of Applied Education, the Director supports the learning and development of our scholars in the certificate, MEd, and EdD programs in Applied Education. The Director is responsible for program administration and planning, supporting and coordinating curriculum development and assessment, and leading special programs to support the advancement of our students. The Director is responsible for building critical links to engage faculty and campus partners in teaching, research, and curricular experiences. The Director collaborates with the Admissions Office to recruit the strongest pool of applicants and supervises staff assigned to the Applied Education Program to support the success of the program and its students.
Daily Operations
- Advises all graduate students in Applied Education, serving as the first and primary contact and ensuring students take the required courses each semester and meet required milestones for timely completion of their programs; review applied research projects and oversee final submission of the doctoral dissertation;
- Develop and oversee policies and procedures for the Applied Education program; develop and oversee curriculum for the Applied Education program, including meeting accreditation requirements and deadlines; oversee program assessment and evaluation, provides information on request;
- Consults with key stakeholders on a variety of issues concerning graduate education and student issues, including student affairs representatives;
- Chair, Applied Education Program Admissions Committee; maintain committee roster and oversee all aspects of admissions, coordinating the MMC Admissions
- Chair, Applied Education Program Council, which serves as program curriculum committee, program disciplinary committee, and student grievance committee; Member, SOGS Curriculum Committee and Member, SOGS Student Evaluation and Promotion Committee
- Prepare documents and data for accreditation and other regulatory evaluations; Collect and analyze course evaluations for all courses in the Applied Education program; Reviews and verify program evaluations and audits; Oversee program data management and repository for training grants and SACSCOC documentation;
- SOGS representative to national organizations for applied education; some travel required
- Teaches in SOGS courses as needed;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills
- Successful candidates should have prior experience in directing research and educational programs and should have demonstrated leadership qualities commensurate with directing an academic unit
- Ability to organize and prioritize to accomplish goals; time management skills
- Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communications skills, strong team player with commitment to Meharry values
- Must be able to expertly handle multiple tasks and priorities and meet deadlines; must be well-organized and pay attention to details.
- Must possess experience working in an academic medical center environment
- Must possess the computer skills and ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and concepts, including use of electronic resources such as Dropbox, Adobe, Zoom, and Trello.
- Must be able to handle confidential data.
Required Education and Experience
- Must have a Doctoral Degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., D.O., or Dr.P.H. or other equivalent academic doctoral degree) and five years of experience in teaching and academic leadership experience in a medical education setting.
