The Opportunity:
The United States Attorney’s Office, Southern District of New York (“SDNY-USAO”) has an immediate opening for a Forensic Technician. This position plays a crucial role in managing and securing the growing volume of electronically stored evidence (“ESI”) coming into SDNY-USAO. The individual selected for this assignment will work with a small number of other Digital Evidence custodians who together will be responsible for establishing a chain of custody for all digital evidence coming into SDNY-USAO. The Forensic Technicians will serve as a centralized resource for tracking electronic evidence and will work directly with Assistant United States Attorneys, Paralegals, Special Agents and the eDiscovery Coordinator to execute tasks related to data tracking, review and discovery of ESI.
The individual selected for this position will be responsible for logging original evidence copies of electronic evidence in a Digital Evidence Vault to be maintained by the Forensic Technicians and then creating a working copy of the evidence to provide to the prosecution team. These responsibilities will necessitate downloading of electronic search warrant returns and responses to subpoenas and requests to third parties, among other types of evidence.
The Forensic Technicians will also work closely with SDNY-USAO’s litigation support personnel team to facilitate the processing of incoming digital evidence into a format that can be reviewed by the Prosecution Team.
The Forensic Technicians will also assist in tracking the production of discovery by SDNY-USAO to third parties once a case has been brought. The Forensic Technicians will maintain a copy of all electronic productions in the Digital Evidence Vault.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain a database and system for processing and tracking electronically stored information (“ESI”), to include an Electronic Evidence Vault
- Maintain Original Evidence Copies of Electronic Evidence Received from external parties
- Download data received from external parties
- Create working copies of Electronic Evidence Received from external parties
- Determine nature and extent of processing needed by Litigation Support to facilitate access and review of ESI
- Plan and coordinate efforts with law enforcement agencies involved in litigation team activities, including following best practices and procedures for collecting and producing ESI using available software so that ESI is received in the most accessible format
- Maintain a log of all electronic discovery produced in charged cases;
- • Coordinate with third-party vendors as needed
- Organize information in summary fashion in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
Qualifications:
Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required, preferred currently enrolled in college courses in Digital Forensic Science, Computer Science/ Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Mathematics, Criminal Justice, or a related field and one or more years work experience in computer hardware, network administration, or cyber-crime investigations
- Must able to attain at least 1 of the following certifications: EnCase® Certified Examiner (EnCE), AccessData Certified Examiner (ACE), Cellebrite Certified Mobile Examiner (CCME) Certification (CCME), or similar vendor specific certification within 12 months of hiring.
- Must be able to use forensic tools such as EnCase® Forensic, Forensic Toolkit®, Cellebrite UFED, etc. under supervision.
- Must have demonstrated experience in dead box data acquisition methodologies.
- Must be able to perform entry-level data collection and processing under direct supervision
- Must have knowledge of the Federal Rules of Evidence (FRE) as they apply to electronic evidence.
Desired:
- Certification in eDiscovery program also preferred.
- A familiarity with criminal/civil law at the federal level is preferred.
