The Role: Physical Educators in the School Age Program are creative, energetic, career-oriented teaching professionals who are motivated to educate individuals with developmental disabilities in an ungraded self-contained classroom.  Physical Educators are offered on-going trainings and support provided by board certified behavior analysts and other qualified professionals to enhance and maximize career growth. Our school programs operate on a 12-month calendar.  This is a great opportunity to get valuable experience and knowledge working in a classroom and community setting following the principles of applied behavior analysis. 

What You Bring to Brightway Living & Learning: 

  • Must possess a bachelor's or master’s degree and NYS Certification in Physical Education or Adaptive Physical Education 
  • Must demonstrate an interest in working with students with disabilities.  
  • Must demonstrate good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.  
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work in a team environment

What You Will Do: 

  • Administer formal and informal assessments and prepare progress reports in Adaptive Physical Education (APE) in accordance with program procedures and student IEP requirements.
  • Provide Adaptive Physical Education instruction in accordance with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), maintaining service delivery and staffing ratios consistent with program and classroom requirements.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and collect data on student performance and progress toward IEP goals and objectives in accordance with established program procedures.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, quarterly reviews, Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings, staff meetings, professional development activities, and in-service trainings to support student success and promote the dissemination of information related to student needs and programming.
  • Plan, organize, and implement special events, recreational activities, and program-wide physical education initiatives as requested by the supervisor or determined by the Adaptive Physical Education Department.
  • Assist with duties that support the overall safety, health, and well-being of students such as bus duty, lunch supervision, field trip supervision, maintaining appropriate student-to-staff ratios during emergencies, and preparing gymnasium spaces to accommodate special events and program activities.
  • Maintain the safety, cleanliness, inventory, and operational condition of all equipment and materials utilized within the Adaptive Physical Education program.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, administrators, and families to support student participation, inclusion, and achievement in physical education and school-based activities.
  • Modify physical education activities, equipment, and instructional strategies to ensure students have meaningful access to the curriculum and opportunities for success.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

What You Must Be Able to Do: 

  • Modify the area to secure the safety of the children i.e., move/push tables and other heavy objects up to 20 lbs. 
  • Lift/move 20 lbs. (mats). 
  • Run after students up to 500 feet. 
  • Run to a classroom in need up to 500 feet. 
  • Kneel, twist and bend. 
  • Respond to fire alarms.
