Location: ELSC 

Required Education Level: GED or High School diploma

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

  • Supervise the general operations of the vehicle maintenance shop, including, but not limited to, employees, vehicles, tools and equipment.
  • Perform periodic inspections of vehicles and mechanics' work to ensure quality maintenance is performed.
  • Prepare for, perform, and follow up of biannual DOE state bus and van inspections.
  • Maintain accurate vehicle and employee records.
  • Evaluate, coach and discipline employees.
  • Develop and implement transportation personnel training and safety programs for vehicles, mechanics, premises, vehicle staff and students.
  • Lead transportation department hiring, including selecting and training personnel.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Investigate, prepare, and submit reports on accidents involving district vehicles.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of roads within the district and assist in the assessment of road conditions.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and contracts related to the district's transportation service.
  • Lead the training program for all positions within the Transportation Department, including professional development, driving, driving certifications, student management and retraining.
  • Lead the student behavior referral program by directing the Behavior Committee and handling escalated communication with administration, parents, students, and staff.
  • Assist in development and evaluation of bus routes.
  • Assume leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Fleet Supervisor or Transportation Manager.
  • Answer telephone and appropriately handle or escalate issues.
  • Effectively operate two-way radio to communicate with staff.
  • Communicate with school administrators, staff and parents.
  • Utilize technology when required.
  • Effectively work in bus routing system, vehicle maintenance system, GPS system, email, communication system, word processing, spreadsheets, and other software programs as necessary.
  • Work as a team member on various projects.
  • Maintain confidential information.
  • Maintain a cooperative attitude and build rapport with students, coworkers, leadership, parents, school personnel, and the community.
  • Use effective and professional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Present self in a professional manner including attire and being alert and attentive.
  • Successfully complete all required trainings, meetings, classes, conferences, and professional development.
  • Accurately complete reports and paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Abide by federal law, state law, and district policies, procedures, and expectations.
  • Safely and appropriately operate various types of school buses, district vehicles, and equipment.
  • Emergency road service calls.
  • Property maintenance including snow removal.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

PREPARATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS

 

  • Maintain driving record acceptable per District standards
  • Obtain and or maintain a minimum of a valid Class B CDL license, with proper school bus endorsement
  • Obtain and maintain a valid DOT physical and valid Medical Certificate, per FMCSA requirements
  • Preferred experience with CDL or Chauffeur's License with passenger experience.
  • Preferred experience with leading safety and training programs and leading 200+ group meetings.
  • Experience in handling escalated situations and de-escalation techniques
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in telephone skills, typing, and filing
  • Proactively manage responsibilities and solve problems autonomously
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and initiate responsibility
  • Ability to adjust work hours to meet the needs of the district and the transportation department.
