A Brief Overview
The Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides advanced nursing care in the acute care setting, based on educational preparation and/or certification in the practitioner role to a specific patient population. Care goals include promotion of healing, and prevention of illness and recidivism. The Neurosurgery APP assumes the management of patients, functioning in both an independent and collaborative role with the physician, case manager, and other members of the health care team. The APP performs select procedures; designs individualized treatment plans, evaluates outcomes, and modifies the treatment plan as needed in accordance with established management protocols and regulating bodies. The APP facilitates the transition of patients between service units and provides/coordinates complex patients and family teaching. The delivery of professional nursing care at Stormont Vail Health is guided by Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring and the theory of Shared governance, both of which are congruent with the mission, vision, and values of the organization
Education Qualifications
- Must be a graduate of an accredited PA/APRN program. Meets educational preparation or other qualifications within specified time frames as determined/outlined by specific department policy.

Skills and Abilities
- All APRN incumbents are required to maintain Registered Nurse competencies as designated by Federal and State organizations and as outlined in SVH policy.
- Exhibits professionalism by assisting with research, educating others, and leadership in practice.
- Demonstrates and maintains expertise in the performance of selected procedures as specified by management protocols.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Nurse - KSBN Must have valid APRN licensure. Be certified as a nurse practitioner by a recognized national certifying body that has established standards for nurse practitioners. Required or
- Physician Assistant (PA) - KSBHA Required
- Additional certification may be required in certain patient care settings or populations. The department director will provide specific information and the time frame in which such certification may be attained at the time of hire/transfer into department.
What you will do
- Provides primary care for the Neurosurgery population in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Ensures that care delivered to patients is provided according to the Stormont Vail Health mission, strategic plans, and all internal/external regulations, policies and procedures. Practices within the Kansas Nurse Practice Act and within the guidelines of management protocols. Supports the established care models of Stormont Vail Regional Health Center.
- Functions independently and collaboratively with the physician and all disciplines to provide continuity of health care services for individuals, families, and/or groups. Evaluates the health status, acute episodes of illness, and health care needs of individuals through emphasis on history, physical exam, and psychosocial assessment in collaboration with other health care teams.
- Analyzes data to identify health/illness problems, the human responses to actual or potential health/illness problems, variations from the norm in diagnosis, emergent problems, and complications.
