Job Title: Scientist – Spectroscopy (NWS 00807)
THIS POSITION IS SHORT TERM, MAX 1000 HOURS PER CALENDAR YEAR
North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer’s mission. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.
Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly-motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.
The Engineering Directorate has an opening within the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED) for a Scientist with a strong background in laser spectroscopy. The successful candidate will be a subject-matter expert in the area of experimental laser spectroscopy and the atomic spectroscopy of actinide materials. DTED has various projects that require the support of a senior laser spectroscopist. The successful candidate will report to the DTED Associate Division Leader and will work independently to provide guidance to others and provide review of deliverables.
This position may require the employee to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift, and/or weekends to accomplish goals. The selected candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.
Essential Duties
- Review and analyze atomic spectroscopy data while providing technical expertise on the design of new laser spectroscopy experiments including technical analysis and interpretation of the results.
- Recommend improvements to process or design that enable success in experimental or design activities.
- Effectively work with a team of scientists and technicians on analyzing actinide spectroscopy data to design new experiments supporting national security missions.
- Deliver creative and unique solutions to difficult problems and act as a strong mentor providing guidance that is impactful to other’s development.
- Attend technical reviews, review experiment design, review email, observe operations in laboratory or in the field.
- Effectively impact team members and peers with technical expert level knowledge.
- Support interpretation of experiment results ensuring scientific rigor.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biology or other related scientific fields with a minimum of 10 years of experience in experimental design or laser spectroscopy.
- Previous knowledge and experience of LLNS policies and procedures.
- Deep knowledge of atomic spectroscopy, laser spectroscopic methods, and laser engineering, especially in the area of actinide spectroscopy.
- Experience working on laser development, nonlinear optics, atomic and molecular spectroscopy.
- Ability to work within a diverse team environment.
- Subject matter expert in actinide laser spectroscopy with expert documentation skills.
- Ability to utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Custom software or scripts (e.g., MATLAB or Python).

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q
(position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
