What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers competitive pay commensurate with education and experience.  New hires are typically brought into the organization between $67,161 and $88,988. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

The City and County of Denver has announced furlough days, or unpaid days off, for most employees to meet a budget shortfall in 2025. There is one fixed furlough day for all limited (temporary positions with an end date) and unlimited (permanent) employees on November 28th, the day after Thanksgiving. If you receive an offer for this position, your annual pay will determine whether you are required to take additional furlough days. Details will be discussed during the offer process for selected candidate.

Location & Schedule

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. This position reports to our offices at 1200 N. Federal Boulevard in Denver three days a week and telecommutes remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.

Who We Are & What You’ll Do

Specifically, as an Accountant Senior you will:

  • Create and perform moderately complex reconciliations of various special revenue funds, to include cash balance and other balance sheet accounts monthly in compliance with Fiscal Accountability Rules using manual and automated processes
  • Analyze and research variances in expense and revenue accounts; determine what, if any, corrective action is necessary to correct any problems or issues that may arise, with little supervision
  • Perform routine to moderately complex reconciliations, ledger maintenance, journal entries, and inventory controls
  • Research and resolve outstanding variances in bank statement and account reconciliations on a monthly basis
  • Review transactions for proper processing, coding, documentation and compliance with GAAP, Uniform Guidance, Fiscal Accountability Rules and DHS policies and procedures
  • Assist with compiling documents for audits; create schedules as needed
  • Assist with conducting special projects regarding financial transactions by researching and analyzing accounting issues, performing financial calculations, and creating reports for management review
  • Work with Department of Finance Controller’s Office to answer questions and resolve discrepancies
  • Assist in developing new policies and procedures; make recommendations and coordinate the implementation of policies and procedures for assigned functions.
  • Assist division co-workers to complete special projects as assigned

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Experience in governmental accounting, particularly in the Human Services environment
  • Attention to detail with a strong grasp of performing complex financial analyses and reconciliations in Excel
  • A detailed understanding of GAAP, Uniform Guidance and/or City Fiscal Accountability Rules
  • A commitment to exceptional customer service
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills—ability to ef
