Hours: 8am-5pm Mon-Fri 

GENERAL DUTIES:
The “Lead Coder” responsibility is to supervise and coordinate the overall operational and compliance activities for the coding section.  The “Lead Coder” may function in a hands-on or “working” role.  The Lead Coder will evaluate work methods, procedures and ensure efficiency for the coding section.  
 

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES: 

 

  1. Complies with established policies and procedures, and objectives.
  2. Takes a lead role in training, orienting and assisting coders.
  3. Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintain good employee relations, and interdepartmental objectives.
  4. Consistently demonstrates a professional and proactive attitude with all employees, hospital staff, physicians and other customers.
  5. Consistently ensures privacy and patient/employee dignity by maintaining employee/patient and departmental confidentiality with no infractions.
  6. Answers the phone and responds to verbal requests in a timely manner.
  7. Is competent in all of the position responsibilities, meets quality and productivity expectations and competency requirements for each responsibility.
  8. Demonstrates complete understanding of release of information, patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.
  9. Monitors and assists coding manager with DNFC management to goals.
  10. Tracks and trends coder quality results, and reports to management monthly.
  11. Reviews and resolves CARDS edits daily
  12. Performs second level coding reviews on accounts sent back from RevInt, Iodine, CARDS edits, coding audits, and coding/billing editor.
  13. Provides coders with education and guidance on correct coding.
  14. Assists with coder questions, coding reviews, coding inquiries, and Rapid Response.  Codes accounts when additional coverage is needed.
  15.  Completes requirements from Tenet coding education and maintains coding credentials.
  16. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  17. This position predominately works from home.

Required:

High School Diploma or GED

Completion of RHIT, CCS, or equivalent program

RHIT or CCS credential through AHIMA

5 plus years of acute inpatient facility and outpatient coding experience                             

Preferred:                 

  1. RHIA and CCS credential through AHIMA
  2. Coding Leadership experience
