About the role

Assists registered pharmacists in the preparation, dispensing, and distribution of sterile and non-sterile medications and associated documentation. Maintains accurate records utilizing established policies and procedures to ensure medications are available and ready for patient administration when required. All activities are performed under the supervision of a pharmacist.

In addition to the roles of a pharmacy technician listed above, this position serves as part of the leadership team. These responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serves as a liaison between pharmacy technicians and other team members within the department.
  • Provides informal supervisory oversight and documentation of the following in collaboration with the pharmacy leadership team:
    •  Day-to-day operations, scheduling, and staffing when required to meet department needs.
    • Training development and coordination of training for new team members.
    • Education, re-education, and evaluation of pharmacy technicians of their assigned roles.
    • Recruitment of pharmacy technician personnel.
  •  Assists the leadership team with quality and regulatory tasks as assigned.

Reports to Pharmacy Manager of Operations. Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the CCMC standards. 

Phamaceutical Preparation:

  • Accurately prepares sterile and non-sterile drug products to meet the needs of both inpatients and outpatients within the facility. Pharmacy technicians in this role must demonstrate understanding and competency of governing policies (USP 795, 797, 800, and departmental standard operating procedures) to prepare any and all drug products for administration to patients when required.
  • Assists multidisciplinary team members (nurses, providers, PCAs, etc.) by triaging medication related requests and fulfilling them accurately and efficiently in conjunction with the pharmacist.
  • Establishes and communicates a clear vision for the pharmacy technician staff that focuses on patient safety and regulatory compliance, and aligns with organizational objectives.
  • Assist the Operations manager in fostering staff growth and development both professionally and personally. 
  • Assists in monitoring and evaluating pharmacy technician training, productivity, and growth. 
  • Provide support and guidance to the pharmacy technician team and ancillary support services while promoting the values of our organization and facilitates teamwork and cooperation among staff.
  • Works jointly with members of the pharmacy leadership team in efforts to optimize pharmacy operations as a collaborative responsibility.

Departmental Operations/Quality Improvement:

  • Under the direction of the pharmacy operations manager
  • Helps to supervise day-to-day medication prep/delivery and supporting infrastructural systems (automated dispensing cabinets, remote IV checking, kit preparation services, electronic health record, etc.) Utilizes lean processes and continual improvement pillars to optimize these systems to support patient care/safety and optimization of workflows.
  • Ensures compliance with state/federal documentation requirements regarding medication dispensing, controlled substances, etc.
  • Provide constructive feedback to team members via quarterly check-ins, annual reviews, and as needed when required. 
  • Designs, establishes and maintains a pharmacy technician staffing and scheduling plan (including staffing when required) that effectively accomplishes the department’s goals and objectives.
  • Creation of, monitor, and evaluation of pharmacy technician training.
  • Collaborates in the development and review of policies and procedures governing operations of the pharmacy department.
  • Demonstrate and communicate knowledge of the age-related differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence to ensure patient safety.
  • Optimization of different applications related to pharmacy operational excellence including automated dispensing machines, IV management workflow system, inventory management/ carousel, controlled substance applications and electronic medical record as it relates to pharmacy specific operations.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • In partnership with the operations manager, support the oversight, management, and development of the pharmacy technician staff.
  • Communicates expectations, provides ongoing coaching/feedback, objectively assess employee performance and provide appropriate feedback.
