Job Summary

We are excited to open a new Pub on our Northwestern University campus in Evanston!

 

Do you enjoy using your culinary skills in fast paced growing environment? We are currently seeking a Sous Chef for this exciting campus concept.  In this role, you will be responsible for successfully supporting the culinary operations for student dining. You will assist in the supervision, preparation, and cooking of various food items, as well as developing daily menu items and their preparation and garnishment. Additionally, you may supervise hourly associates and collaborate with the Executive Chef/Chefs to develop new menus and assist with ordering. Key Responsibilities

  • Support the daily leadership of Back-of-House operations, ensuring smooth workflow across prep, cooking, service coordination, sanitation, and closing duties.
  • Uphold high culinary standards by consistently monitoring food taste, texture, and presentation to align with the Pub’s elevated, upscale-casual experience.
  • Assist with onboarding and developing kitchen team members; reinforce safety protocols, sanitation practices, and proper culinary techniques.
  • Partner with the Executive Chef, FOH leadership, and operations team to test new menu items, contribute to seasonal refreshes, and help execute special events.
  • Take an active role in ordering, inventory control, and vendor communication to maintain accurate stock levels and support cost-effective purchasing.
  • Track and help manage BOH food and labor costs; provide feedback to leadership to ensure targets are met without sacrificing quality.
  • Maintain compliance with health department regulations, food-safety guidelines, and internal company requirements.
  • Assist in creating and adjusting kitchen schedules to meet business volumes and staffing needs.
  • Serve as a hands-on leader guiding line operation, resolving issues quickly, and ensuring timely ticket execution.
  • Perform regular line checks, quality reviews, and tasting evaluations to confirm readiness before and during service.
  • Promote a positive, collaborative, and accountability-driven kitchen environment; help coach associates to achieve performance expectations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Chef or the Director overseeing the unit.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A.S. or equivalent experience
  • Progressive culinary/kitchen management experience, depending upon formal degree or training
  • Catering experience a plus
  • High volume, complex foodservice operations experience - highly desirable
  • Comprehensive knowledge of food and catering trends with a focus on quality, production, sanitation, food cost controls, and presentation
  • Must be experienced with computers 
  • Must be willing to participate in client satisfaction programs/activities 
  • ServSafe® Certified
