Who are we?

FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf or hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.

 

 

 

How you will make an impact

The incumbent in this position reports directly to the Executive Director of Safety and Facilities Operations and is responsible for planning and directing the Safety Program as well as managing the Maintenance Mechanics/Carpenters for the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB). 

  • Responsible for monitoring and keeping accurate administrative records for programs including, but not limited to, hazardous and bio-hazardous waste management, fire code compliance, safety/risk management planning, laboratory safety programs, and hazard communication programs. Oversees environmental health and safety services including: hazardous waste management and compliance, environmental assessment, OSHA compliance/audits and environmental health and safety training. Directs and supervises risk management functions for the management and purchase of various insurances. Works with State Risk Management to properly address claims, both against and on-behalf-of FSDB. Supervises the maintenance, preventative maintenance (including routine care, repair and renovations), and upgrades of the fire alarm, EBI, and mass notification systems as well as buildings and grounds. Oversees building and grounds inspection programs and emergency warning systems. Plans, schedules and monitors daily workloads of the Maintenance Mechanics, Carpentry Crew, and the Locksmith. Generates work orders for each discrepancy found and assigns duties accordingly. Initiates procurement of materials and equipment and develops/tracks department budget to ensure proper spending. Advertises, interviews and selects applicants for positions within the department.  Serves as the Property Coordinator for the agency, ensuring that facility conditions are updated when assessing replacement values, depreciation, and actual cash value for insurance premiums.  Annually assesses property insurance data and collaborates with the Department of Financial Services for reporting.
  • Manages the inspection of buildings for fire safety and prevention. Determines the adequacy of fire detection and extinguishing systems, construction materials where fire-rated properties are required and the adequacy of means of egress. Reviews blueprints for safety deficiencies. Re-inspects assigned properties to ensure compliance with applicable codes, laws and regulations where deficiencies have occurred. Responds to requests from staff for advice relating to fire safety regulations. Ensures only licensed individuals install, maintain and service fire extinguishers, fire suppression and fire alarm systems. Conducts investigations of proper installation and servicing of fire equipment, fire suppression and fire alarm systems and is the contact for the after-hours emergency repairs of building fire alarm systems. Responsible for fire drills campus-wide (drills may occur after normal work hours) and generates after action reports.
