Job Duties
To provide quality instructions and to meet the individual needs of the students in the areas of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Educational Diploma (GED). Additionally, to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth’s statutes and program certification requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to facilitate other instructors. The demonstrated ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching and work with students and inmate aides in a classroom/Lab environment. The demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records; Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education. Must possess working knowledge of basic adult education field, adult literacy, and computer software appropriate for program needs. Experience in maintaining classroom, equipment, and inventories; Demonstrate competency in the related field of current trade licensure.
Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in Adult Education/Special Education or in a relevant educational field, preferably a major or minor in high school math, science or other relevant subject.
Experience teaching adults and or youth and knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education is required.
Licensure: Must possess a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional Teaching License from the Virginia Department of Education (VADOE) or qualify for reciprocity from another state and without deficiencies.

Please note you are responsible for any renewal points to maintain a teaching license under the guidelines of Virginia Department of Education to comply with the requirements for your continued employment in this position. If you are seeking reciprocity from another state, you must submit all documentation for a Virginia Teaching License within 90 days of employment and satisfy all requirements within a year.
Additional Considerations
Master’s degree with a major or minor in a relevant educational field. Prefer experience teaching adults and or youth in a correctional or alternative education setting. Prefer knowledge and experience of policy and procedures governing adult correctional education. Knowledge of correctional education classroom management. The demonstrated ability to supervise students and inmate aides in the correctional facility; knowledge of the Department of Corrections (DOC) institutional policies and procedures.
