Job Description

Job Summary

This position reports to the Manager, Epic Core Services and Integrations. The IT Systems Engineer is a critical hands-on role responsible for Linux RedHat Epic Cache/IRIS servers. The IT Systems Engineer is responsible for smooth day-to-day operational management of our Epic EMR Production and Non-Production servers. The IT Systems Engineer is responsible for Epic Quarterly Updates, weekly Software Updates and proactive monitoring of our Epic environments. 

The IT Systems Engineer must be efficient and skilled at building and maintaining computing infrastructures. You’ll be working alongside our IT and Applications teams to design and set up our Epic server environment, then manage our system architecture, software and hardware needs. The IT Systems Engineer is also responsible for design, build, testing, and support for secure file transfer (SFTP) connections; to support internal and external customers and ensure data travels through channels and processes efficiently. The Systems Engineer will be responsible for coordinating the SFTP process with various internal teams including Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Infrastructure and Security, to ensure accurate results and will troubleshoot transmission issues and escalate as necessary.

In addition to ensuring our infrastructure is optimized to run at peak performance, you’ll also need to be cognizant of our security needs, including implementing top-level fail safes to protect our systems. You will need to be willing to reevaluate your skillset and be willing to enhance your skills for the future. You will be part of a fast-paced team in a rapidly moving environment. You will need to display solid technical competency, instinctive business/healthcare acumen, and a strong understanding of how to design, develop and integrate complex systems that propels our organization into the future, and supports our patient needs.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Administer, configuring and optimizing Linux RedHat servers which support our Epic EMR.

  • Maintain up-to-date patching, backup and recovery.

  • Proactive monitoring of the Epic servers via SystemPulse.

  • Participate in planning, setup, testing and implementation of Epic Quarterly Updates and weekly Software Updates.

  • Perform and manage project tasks related to Epic servers needs as assigned for Information Management or organizational project tasks.

  • Maintain Lurie Children’s policies and Information Management department standards for the Epic servers.

  • Provide consultative services to end users regarding Epic technology/application.

  • Complete assigned Service Desk support tickets within IM Department standards.

  • Perform ongoing capacity and performance planning for all assigned servers, applications, and technologies.

  • Assume on-call responsibility per weekly schedule.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must Have

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems/Technology/Computer Science (or equivalent hands-on work experience).

  • 1-3 years’ Linux RedHat Epic CACHE/IRIS experience.

  • 1-3 years’ experience supporting Epic Quarterly Updates and weekly Software Updates.

  • 1-3 years’ experience using SystemPulse and Kuiper.

  • Excellent time and project management skills, customer service and interpersonal skills, system diagnostic and communication (written and oral) are critical for success in this position. Analytical thinking for effective problem determination and correction within the department and in the user community is essential.

Nice to Have

  • Relevant Epic Certification(s).

  • Experience in information systems/technology within a healthcare provider organization.

  • Experience in SFTP and Python scripting.
