Position Summary Information

General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Director of Tutoring & Transitions, the tutor is responsible for providing individual or small group academic support to improve student success and retention on the assigned campus (Lincoln, ESQ, Milford, or Beatrice) and to fulfill the goals and objectives of aiding in student success. Tutors work in both face-to-face and online sessions. Subjects needed include math, science (physics, chemistry, biology, etc), business, computer/information technology, and health sciences. This is a part-time temporary position.
Essential Functions
Provide Academic Support During Assigned Hours
  • Aid students by (1) providing clarification of instructions, information, and concepts in student assignments, (2) assisting students in subject-specific competencies, (3) promoting independent learning strategies to boost student self-confidence, and (4) providing effective study practices needed to master content. Always be punctual for appointments or assigned hours and notify the Director or Academic Coaches of appointment cancellations.

Function as a Member of the Academic Success Center Team
  • Interact with colleagues, students, and staff in a manner that promotes a positive image of SCC and the Academic Success Center, which promotes and supports instructional and institutional referral services such as retention, accommodations, counseling, and/or other student services.

Record Maintenance
  • Maintains records associated with students receiving tutoring and assists in creating reports on such data when needed.

Marginal Functions
  1. Participate in training and development sessions to improve tutoring practices and to learn new tutoring techniques, including distance tutoring.
  2. Assist with public relations activities such as campus tours and classroom presentations.
  3. Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with program chairs, faculty, adjuncts, staff, and student services units.
  4. Refer students to student support services as needed.
  5. Assist the Director of Tutoring & Transitions with the acquisition of resource materials and data appropriate for inclusion in the Academic Success Center.
  6. Organize a tutoring environment to promote productivity and learning.
  7. Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, and build confidence.
  8. Maintain required records.
  9. Teach and implement student success skills, study skills, note-taking skills, and test-taking strategies.
  10. Implement technology for distance tutoring.
  11. May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
  12. Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
  13. Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  1. Subject competency in area tutoring
  2. Ability to effectively build rapport and exhibit good communication skills with students
  3. Ability to multitask and switch topics within a session
  4. Check email daily and use proper phone and email etiquette to set up appointments, answer questions, and collaborate with the Director and Academic Coaches
  5. Ability to work and communicate with students and staff of diverse academic and personal backgrounds
