About the role
As EHS Specialist, this individual will be responsible for establishing, implementing, managing, and continuously improving the environment, health, and safety programs for the facility. This specialist will have broad knowledge of EHS compliance programs and EHS specialty areas including Industrial Safety, Environmental Engineering, Safety Engineering, and Risk Management.
As Industrial Hygiene Professional, this individual will be responsible for the implementation of Haleon’s Industrial Hygiene strategic objectives & targets and the management of related programs.
As Chemical Agent Subject Matter Expert (CA SME), this individual will be responsible for managing compliance to the requirements of the Haleon Chemical Agent Standard and related Technical Support Documents (TSDs), including local statutory requirements.
The EHS Specialist – Industrial Hygiene will provide guidance in managing budgets to support outside services and operating expenses. The role includes strategic EHS planning as well as a tactical role for site-wide EHS systems, EHS regulations, and best practices.
The EHS Specialist will also need understanding and knowledge to lead and support Safety at the site as it relates to key areas such as confined space, process safety, machinery safety, electrical and utilities safety, injury and illness prevention, incident investigation (RCA), risk assessments, regulatory compliance, internal auditing, EHS training, and behavioral safety.
Key responsibilities:
- Helps to ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of employees on site and acts as Chemical Agent Subject Matter Expert (CA SME) providing guidance and support to management, project teams, and employees. Could act as Ergonomics SME as well.
- Established programs to identify and assess workplace exposure risk such as chemical agents (dust, solvent, asbestos) and physical agents (noise, vibration, laser).
- Develops strategies and programs to manage exposures at source as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) and removes the need for personal protective equipment (PPE) (lowest form of control).
- Helps create a work environment that is clean and comfortable for the operator allowing them to perform at their best, free from distractions (like noise).
- Collaborates with other professionals to develop engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE) strategies to manage exposure risks.
- Review and track investigations of injuries, illnesses, environmental releases, non-injury accidents and near-misses to ensure that they are effective, and that they identify and resolve root causes. Lead investigations into serious adverse events.
- Carry out regular workplace inspections and audits to monitor compliance with regulatory requirements and company and site policies, standards, and procedures.
- Coordinate the completion of job safety analyses and risk assessments.
- Support SMEs in the areas of process, machinery, electrical, utilities, contractor safety as required. Including participation in HAC studies, Hazard Studies, and PSSRs.
- Establish site EHS policies, objectives, key performance indicators and targets that reflect local needs and alignment with Haleon’s short and long term EHS strategy. Ensure local EHS SOPs effectively comply with Haleon’s overall EHS management system.
- Design, conduct and oversee EH&S training. Monitor and analyze EHS performance and initiate action to support or correct trends.
- Establish programs to manage the site’s different EHS risks and impacts, coordinated within an overall EHS management system. Review change proposals (including capital projects and new product introductions) to identify potential EHS issues and participate in their resolution.
