Even if you might not meet every requirement, we strongly encourage you to apply. You might just be the right candidate for us.

We are looking for a Staff Failure Analysis Engineer to lead failure analysis investigations into electrical/electromechanical components, modules, and systems on the next generation of Autonomous Vehicles.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with fleet operations, hardware design, reliability, test, suppliers, and GM to support both validation failures and field failures.

To accomplish this, you will have access to our robust internal Failure Analysis lab as well as a network of 3rd party labs.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Use failure analysis techniques (such as electrical characterization, fault recreation, 2D / 3D X-ray, SEM-EDS, cross sectioning, and IR thermography) to determine root cause.

  • Write concise reports that summarize key findings, propose corrective actions, and qualitatively assess risk.

  • Serve as a domain expert for electronics failure analysis. Provide ad-hoc consultation for internal teams, as well as guidance for the failure analysis activities performed at suppliers and at 3rd party labs. Ensure that a high bar for technical analysis is being met.

  • Build strong relationships with key partners within design, manufacturing, reliability, testing, and supplier quality teams. Collaborate with these partners to define and validate countermeasures.

  • Identify additional tools and capital equipment necessary to continue building out the internal failure analysis capabilities at Cruise.

  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and technicians within the Failure Analysis team.

What you must have:

  • BS + 10 YOE in Electrical Engineering

  • Proven experience in Failure Analysis or Electrical Design

  • Proficiency reading electrical schematics (using Altium or similar) and debugging complex electrical systems

  • Proficiency operating electrical test equipment, including digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and power supplies

  • Hands-on experience with common failure analysis techniques, including 2D X-ray, Optical Microscopy, SEM-EDS, Cross Sectioning, and IR Thermography.

  • Strong knowledge of advanced failure analysis techniques, including 3D CT, FTIR, Confocal Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (C-SAM), and Time-domain Reflectometry (TDR).

  • Strong knowledge of PCBA manufacturing (e.g. IPC-6012, IPC-610) and electronics assembly processes.

  • Strong knowledge of: physics of failure and how common failure mechanisms would be triggered through accelerated testing (e.g. mechanical shock/vibration, thermal cycling/shock, powered humidity exposure, high-temperature degradation, HALT).

  • Familiarity with scripting and *nix operating systems

Bonus Points!

  • Experience in automotive or aerospace industries

  • Experience working with vehicle sensors (cameras, radar, lidar)

  • Experience with signal integrity

  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-1580 (destructive physical analysis), EEE-INST-002, or similar
