North America Product and Commercial Counsel - Emerging Products

Responsibilities
The North America Emerging Products Counseling team provides legal support to the company's new and existing B2C and B2B emerging products. The team is seeking a highly experienced, bright, and capable product and commercial counseling professional to join the team. The role will be an integral resource for ByteDance's emerging product and business teams by (i) reviewing new applications, features, functionalities and initiatives and providing guidance, assessing legal implications and suggesting risk mitigation strategies, and (ii) negotiating commercial agreements and reviewing matters related to emerging products. Candidates must be highly collaborative, self-motivated, a strategic thinker, and intellectually curious.
Responsibilities:
- Work with legal and product teams globally to review new and existing B2C and B2B applications (e.g., mobile games, education and learning apps, virtual reality etc), products, features, and initiatives to provide legal risk mitigation strategies to ensure legal compliance for emerging products from a US and Canadian legal perspective.
- Draft, review and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, review marketing campaigns, assist with general transactions and other commercial matters for emerging products for the North America market.
- Advise global product and business teams on the application of a wide range of laws and regulations for US and Canada, with a focus on intellectual property, consumer protection, data protection, content regulation, and online safety related laws.
- Collaborate with product, product operations, enterprise and consumer sales, public policy, communications, privacy, trust & safety and other cross-functional colleagues on product launches, commercial partnerships and campaigns in the North America market.
- Coordinate with other regional counsel and various subject matter expert legal groups.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree plus a Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Member in good standing of the New York state bar (dual qualified in Canada is a plus) or registered in-house counsel in New York.
- Past experience should include counseling on product issues and/or negotiating commercial contracts at a technology company (ideally, consumer-facing digital platform (UGC) or enterprise technology application).
- Experience at a recognized law firm and/or in-house at a technology company.
- Ability to assess legal, practical and business risks in a fast-paced environment and provide sound advice under tight deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the following areas: consumer protection, marketing, contests, platform liability, technology, intellectual property, music and entertainment/content, media, online safety, data protection and privacy.
- Proven track record of operating independently, strong attention to detail, ability to support a diverse workload across business functions and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Experience and comfort working in a global environment with colleagues at all levels in various time zones in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
- The successful candidate will be inquisitive, enthusiastic about technology and humble with a positive attitude.

【For Pay Transparency】Compensation Description (Annually)
The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $170666 - $319200 annually.
Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units.
Benefits may vary depending on the nature of employment and the country work location.
