This division maintains relationships with Morgan Stanley's various industry and government regulators, and also serves as the conduit of financial information to the outside investment community.
Background on the Position
The Investment Management (IM) Finance - Deputy Controller role is part of the Finance Division's IM Finance department. IM Finance provides controllership and financial planning and analysis support to Morgan Stanley's IM segment (MSIM), a leading global asset manager across the public and private markets.
The IM Finance - Deputy Controller role reports to the Global IM Segment Controller and manages a global team responsible for key financial accounting and reporting processes including management fee revenue, direct investments in MSIM funds, and corporate accounting functions. The Deputy Controller is also responsible for developing the controllership team strategy to deliver on the IM Finance and Finance Division transformation vision, including process optimization and location strategy.
Primary Responsibilities / Experience
> Lead and manage a global team of product controllers and change leads (approximately 20 professionals) with responsibilities for general ledger substantiation and supporting external financial reporting, as well as partnering with technology and stakeholders to drive process renovation and other change agenda priorities
> Key accounting and reporting controllership responsibilities include: (a) management fee revenues from sponsored funds, (b) equity method investments, (c) loans and collateralized loan obligations (CLOs), (d) consolidated controlling interests, (e) derivatives and hedging instruments, and (f) carried interest and other performance fees. In addition, responsible for the leveling of investments in the fair value hierarchy, reviewing financial statements and related disclosures, transfer pricing, and certain regulatory reporting requirements for multiple entities
> Assist the IM Finance Global Controller and the IM CFO with financial and operational analysis and execution of strategic business projects/initiatives
> Provide supervision to Morgan Stanley's global financial shared service teams
> Oversee the vision and direct the strategy to renovate accounting systems and processes
> Lead cross-functional process improvement projects affecting accounting
> Partner with senior stakeholders from the Business, Legal, Product Development, Operations, and various parts of Finance to successfully launch new products/investments. Qualifications
> Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting (CPA preferred).
> 12+ years of related work experience in Financial services industry (Investment Management industry preferred).
> Results-oriented with capacity and desire to work both at a strategic and detailed analysis level.
> Able to synthesize and articulate results to a diverse audience (i.e. product control, business managers, business heads, CFO).
> Ability to collaborate cross-functionally on various projects and new initiatives.
> Effective time management and ability to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure situations, and balance multiple tasks.
> Strong financial products knowledge and related US GAAP accounting requirements.
> Strong analytical and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal.
> Ambitious, self-motivated individual, strong work ethic, positive attitude, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
> Bank regulatory reporting experience a plus.
> Proficiency in data analysis tools (Microsoft PowerBI, IBM TM1) and crafting compelling data-driven reporting and commentary utilizing Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word.
