Job Summary:
Creates a successful environment that will promote the growth and development of students and families by developing and implementing instructional programs for 3 to 5 year old children. Creates and adapts instructional materials for regular and special needs students that meet developmental needs in social, emotional, physical and cognitive domains in order to prepare children for a successful transition into a school age educational program.
Essential Functions:
- Implement curriculum that is developmentally appropriate with the input of parents and approval of the Education Coordinator.
- Provide an environment of acceptance that supports and respects gender, culture, language, ethnicity and family composition.
- Provide continuous opportunities for children of all ages and abilities to experience success.
- Observe children carefully to identify their preferred ways of interacting with the environment; taking into account their skills in handling objects and materials, frequency of conversation, interest of listening to stories and songs, and preference to work alone or with others.
- Provide an atmosphere that promotes and reinforces parental involvement in the classroom.
- Conference with parents and staff regarding each child’s developmental and educational status and progress.
- Encourage self-control by setting clear, consistent limits and having realistic expectations for the children.
- Establish appropriate safety and emergency procedures and conducts drills on a regular basis.
- Plans and arranges field trips.
- Integrate all educational aspects of the health, nutrition and mental health services into the program.
- Share information regarding a child’s progress with team members and gathers information on home issues and concerns.
- Conduct monthly parent meetings and assists with parental training as needed.
- Work with appropriate tribal programs and community resources to identify and address program services requirements.
- Provide appropriate environment and adult guidance for participation of children with special needs/disabilities.
- Coordinate with the Disabilities Coordinator and appropriate agencies in developing Individual Family Service Plans (IFSP).
- Adapt curriculum to address and meet individual goals for children as identified in the IFSP.
- Maintain the established monitoring system that assures compliance with performance standards and program goals.
- Abide by and is familiar with all preschool policies.
- Participate in regular training programs and conferences.
- Establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment.
- Conduct weekly staff meetings.
- Supervise and guide classroom staff.
- Report child abuse/neglect to proper authorities as required.
- Maintain current knowledge and skills necessary to comply with regulations and requirements.
- Work with bus drivers to plan and conduct transportation services to and from program.
- Assist in inventory and ordering of all site equipment and materials.
- Serves as a mentor, as requested, for Tribal career development.
- Ensures the hiring, training, promoting, assigning, disciplining and discharging of employees are in accordance with Tribal Law, including without limitation, the Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance (TERO).
- Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Supervisory:
- Ensures the hiring, training, promoting, assigning, disciplining and discharging of employees are in accordance with Tribal Law, including without limitation, the Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance (TERO).
- Assures staff adherence to all policies and procedures, work, safety and administrative rule, Tribal Law and State Regulations.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, or, Associate’s degree with the commitment and ability to earn a Bachelor’s within 2 years.
- Requires three (3) years of related work experience in preschool education.
- First Aid and Food handler’s certifications required.
- Must maintain a valid Oregon driver’s license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe’s vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.
