About this opportunity:

Cenovus is currently looking for an Occupational Safety Specialist to join our team at our Dublin, OH office. We are also open to considering candidates based at any of our other US locations.

The individual in this role will drive key cross-site improvement initiatives by developing and implementing comprehensive plans. Assisting with the creation and maintenance of corporate and regional standards/procedures in the occupational safety space including but not limited to owning the creation of a suite of local COIMS management system documents, establishing site LOD audit plans, and training auditors while providing ongoing audit support.

What you’ll do:

  • Safety Initiative Design & Training:

    • Lead the development and standardization of safety-related processes and tools

    • Provide leadership mentoring and guidance for safety planning and execution

    • Support the implementation and standardization of safety policies (e.g., drug and alcohol policy, work permit standards)

  • Occupational Safety Support Across Assets:

    • Maintain relationships with site asset and corporate teams to support health and safety initiatives

    • Review/build corporate or regional safety standards and assist in implementing key safety initiatives across sites

    • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for occupational safety topics

  • Standard and Policy Development:

    • Assist in the development of corporate COIMS standards and health and safety policies

    • Engage with site teams to collect concerns and feedback for new or updated standards

    • Represent the downstream organization in the creation of standards and assist in implementation plans

  • Occupational Safety Auditing Leadership:

    • Lead the design, training, and implementation of Line of Defense (LOD) auditing programs for the US region

    • Support and assist in third-party audits related to occupational safety

  • Support Regulatory Compliance and Government Relations Functions on Occupational Safety Topics:

    • Ensure compliance with US Government and state/local government regulations related to occupational safety

    • Review regulations, identify actions needed, and plan and complete implementations

    • Work with government agencies and participate in industry forums (e.g., AFPM)

    • Coach site safety practitioners on implementing regulatory changes

Who you are:

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • 10+ years of relevant work experience required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Safety related field

  • 10 years’ experience working in oil and gas or chemicals industry

  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements in the oil and gas environment

  • Experience in Root Cause Analysis and incident investigation leadership

  • Knowledge or experience in a combination of process safety auditing, industrial hygiene, contractor management, safe work permit, and/or emergency response
