Description

 Job Summary
The overall purpose of this role is to ensure timely publication of high-quality material in over 200,000 journal pages annually. The incumbent is responsible for the management of IEEE Transactions/Journals to achieve publication quality, timeliness, and accuracy in accordance with department metrics. Also responsible for providing oversight for a team of Journals Production Managers, monitoring progress, and providing support as needed. The incumbent will work closely with the Director, Editorial Services. 

The Manager, Journal Production is accountable for support of an internal staff of 12 and three or more external vendors. The incumbent must provide measurable quantitative and qualitative support as prescribed by the department productivity, performance, and accuracy metrics.

The Manager Journals Production must work effectively and proactively to find solutions to satisfy the requirements of society customers and meet the needs of the end user, while being workable in an online publishing environment.  When there is a need to escalate or seek guidance on problem solving, the manager should be capable of describing the issues and represent all sides fairly and bring solutions to the table.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a team of 12 direct reports.
  • Assign editorial functions within the team.
  • Ensure quality of all edited material.
  • Support department by assuming direct responsibility for all aspects of at least one assigned publication.
  • Ensure that all assigned team publications are prepared in accordance with acceptable standards.
  • Communicate with team regarding changes in departmental processes and procedures.
  • Communicate upward on status of issues, society concerns, staff activities, and indicate areas in need of improvement.
  • Work closely with society contacts and EICs to maintain timeliness of publications and page budgets.
  • Work with editorial support and publishing technologies groups to provide ongoing feedback related to electronic publishing and workflow management.
  • Stimulate professional development, encourage leadership traits, maintain training program for new editors, journals coordinators, and editorial assistants.
  • Perform personnel evaluations.
  • Recommend compensation reviews and promotions.

Qualifications

 Education
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience English, Journalism, or Communications Req
Work Experience
  • 4-7 years Experience editing for STM journals. A minimum of 2 years of editorial staff management experience Req
  • Experience in managing or working with editing/composition vendors Req
Skills and Requirements
  • A thorough knowledge of publishing systems and on-line editorial skills is essential. Knowledge of XML-based editing systems is required.
  • Must be able to interact professionally with volunteers, authors, editors, vendors, and staff members in person, by telephone, and by e-mail.
  • Must be able to work well in a small group setting.
  • Excellent reading and writing skills are a requirement of the job as well as knowledge of copyediting principles for copyediting of material and for interactions as mentioned under spoken skills, above.
  • This person interacts regularly with the Production team to set priorities/workflows and with upper management regarding department processes and workflows.
