The Position:Makpar has an exciting opportunity for a Systems Engineer to join our growing team. The Systems Engineer will provide support for an Agency (Police “Department”) of approximately 3,200 users. The Systems Engineer will provide business knowledge and technical expertise to implement strategies, evaluate products, and build upon an infrastructure that supports the changing needs of the Agency. This role requires collaboration with federal program managers, agency staff, contracting officers, and multi-disciplinary development teams. The Systems Engineer will design, develop, and integrate complex work systems for every stage of a lifecycle. The ideal candidate will be able to reliably deliver mission-critical infrastructure with an eye toward accessibility, optimization, and security.

Role Specific Duties/ Role Responsibilities:

  • Manage and monitor all infrastructure and systems installations, including configuration, testing, and maintenance
  • Implement and maintain strategies for backup, security, and redundancy
  • Identify potential issues and implement solutions proactively
  • Craft custom scripts that reduce the need for human interaction
  • Enable faster and smarter business processes and develop meaningful analytics
  • Engage regularly with upper management, providing reports on project status, activities, and achievements
  • Communicate with stakeholders to identify what they want to accomplish with a system
  • Use expert-level administration and optimization of hosts and servers to ensure high degree of availability and appropriate resource management
  • Standardize and automate processes using scripting technology
  • Install and configure operating systems, software, and hardware components, and leverage IT staff for routine tasks by clearly documenting design, maintenance, and support procedures
  • Test software routinely for bugs, redundancies, and security issues
  • Conduct high-level root-cause analysis of service interruptions and establish preventive measures
  • The Systems Engineer will be expected to supervise others.
  • The Systems Engineer is required to be onsite at the Fairchild Building in downtown Washington, DC three (3) days per week. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience (6+ years) in enterprise systems engineering design and support.
  • Deep knowledge of server operating systems, hardware, virtualization, and cloud platforms.
  • Certifications in AWS, Azure, Google, Cisco, or others a plus.
  • Experience using database management software
  • Ability to use various programming languages, such as Ruby and Python
  • Strong hardware and software troubleshooting skills.
  • Expertise in a variety of tools and technologies, such as Active Directory, PowerShell, and monitoring tools like Prometheus or Grafana.
  • Experience with or knowledge of programming languages and operating systems, current equipment and technologies, enterprise backup and recovery procedures, system performance-monitoring tools, active directories, virtualization, HTTP traffic, content delivery, and caching
  • Experience in project management, application design and integration, and cloud computing (specifically Microsoft Azure)
  • Expertise in creating, analyzing, and repairing large-scale distributed systems
  • Knowledge of Git or other version-control software
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills

Additional Requirements as per contract/client (Optional or Preferred):

  • Candidates must be a U.S. citizen or a Legal Permanent Resident (Green Card status) for 3 years and be Federal Tax compliant.
  • Knowledge of operating systems (e.g., Linux, UNIX).
  • Experience with scripting and programming languages (e.g., Python, Perl).
