Job Description

Western Digital Media Test Engineering team in San Jose, CA is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Summer Intern who is highly motivated to work in a challenging and dynamic engineering environment. The media test team is responsible for the development and implementation of hardware/software/process/automation solutions in R&D environment, implementing those solutions at worldwide manufacturing sites, along with sustaining activities.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the design, analysis, and testing of mechanical systems and components.
  • Develop and refine 3D models using SolidWorks.
  • Perform calculations and simulations to validate designs and ensure compliance with performance and safety standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot and resolve engineering challenges.
  • Document project findings and create detailed technical reports.
  • Participate in team meetings and provide updates on assigned tasks.

Qualifications

Required: 

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering.

Skills:

  • Strong foundation in mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD for modeling and design.
  • Strong understanding of materials properties and selection for mechanical components.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes such as machining, injection molding, and additive manufacturing.
  • Basic knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and engineering drawings.
  • Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis tools for mechanical, structural and thermal simulations.
  • Some basic experience working with prototyping tools such as 3D printers, CNC machines, or laser cutters.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities with an innovative mindset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for documenting work and presenting projects.
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with engineering projects, academic, extracurricular, or personal projects. Previous internships a plus.
  • Participation in engineering organizations or competitions.
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools such as Excel, Tableau, or similar.
