This position is located in Ithaca, New York. The successful candidate will have the option to perform this role remotely at a location of their choosing within the United States.

The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working outside New York State.

Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) Cloud & Infrastructure Services supports the computing and storage infrastructure that Cornell IT departments rely on to deploy applications, safely store data, and facilitate the work that is essential to the University's mission.  The Systems Support team is responsible for the Managed Servers service, providing stable Linux and Windows platforms as a foundation upon which other divisions can build their services.  As a service organization, we pride ourselves on deep technical knowledge, operating system expertise, a security mindset, and strong troubleshooting/analytical skills.

What you will do:

The Senior Windows Systems Engineer is responsible for providing a secure, robust Windows server environment as part of the Managed Servers service. 

Your primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Design, implement, and support the deployment of physical and virtual servers in on-premises datacenters and in the cloud, including server OS image builds, hardening, and configuration management.
  • Share in the support of on-premises virtual server environments, including hypervisors and hyperconverged infrastructure.
  • Implement technologies and practices for safeguarding the infrastructure, including crafting security policy, evaluating risks, responding to incidents, and documenting compliance with established security standards and benchmarks.
  • Provide in-depth troubleshooting for advanced technical problems in the environment.
  • Lead systems and infrastructure projects to maintain and improve Windows Server management.
  • Document and maintain system standards; research and recommend innovative approaches for system administration tasks.
  • Participate in 24x7 on-call escalation support as part of a team rotation.

What you will be:

You possess a strong service orientation and are someone who has an ability to prioritize multiple high-level tasks and to make sound judgment calls about security situations where the organization's reputation is at stake. You also have excellent written and oral skills including communicating technical material to non-technical audiences and the ability to present technical security topics to the campus IT community.

Additionally, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field plus 5-7 years of experience in production Windows server management.
  • Expertise in managing production server deployments on-premises and in the cloud.
  • Extensive knowledge of Windows operating system management including Active Directory, Group Policy, and configuration management.
  • Experience with virtualized infrastructure, hyperconverged storage, and network protocols.
  • Proficiency in Windows PowerShell local and remote scripting.
