About the role

Job Description Summary

The Research Program Manager will serve as the primary operational lead for Dr. Amol Sharma’s translational research program within the Center for Gut-Brain Neuromodulation (Cg-bN). The program investigates the pathophysiology of the gut-brain axis in a range of conditions including Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI), Neurogastroenterology and GI Motility disorders, Parkinson’s disease, hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and others. A core focus is the development and testing of non-pharmacologic neuromodulation therapies to restore gut-brain axis integrity.

Primary responsibilities of the candidate are focused on providing direct support and guidance to Dr. Sharma, collaborating faculty, and staff as it relates pre and post award activities, principal investigator (PI) research portfolio oversight and management, and reporting. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, overseeing the daily operations of the research laboratory, supervision and performance management of applicable laboratory personnel, oversight of development and implementation of new protocols and troubleshoots challenges, and the analyzation and communication of data. In collaboration with Department of Medicine’s centralized and divisional financial management resources, this position is responsible for assisting with the development and submission of grant applications to include budgeting, as well as post award involvement in financial management and reporting.

As a research administrative leader within the Division of GI & Hepatology, the person holding this position must operate with a substantial amount of autonomy and be willing to use sound judgment while adapting to a regularly changing environment that at times can require assistance that is outside their routine responsibilities. As the research mission grows strategically throughout the division, this individual will provide guidance and direction to other divisional programs to include developing research protocol and projects, hiring decisions, equipment purchases, etc. Accuracy, quality assurance, customer service, and effective communication are important requirements as this position engages with a wide range of individuals both internally and externally. Success will be measured by the impact this individual has on the research programs and projects under their purview. This position will report directly to Dr. Sharma.

Job Description

Job Duties:

30% - Daily and Ongoing Operations: This position is responsible for oversight of the division’s daily and ongoing lab operations with the overarching goal of achieving the strategic research goals and priorities of Dr. Sharma. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversees and guides laboratory staff in recommendations of changes to protocols to improve validity and accuracy.

  • Makes recommendations for acquisition of new equipment and oversees validation and implementation of new equipment and protocols.

  • Ensures the work area is maintained in a safe and uncluttered environment and always maintains accountability for the preparation and maintenance of inspection readiness.

  • Coordinates research activities with Clinical Research Staff.

  • Responds to Safety Events and complaints in a timely manner.

30% - PI Research Portfolio Oversight and Management: Oversees the flow of research projects from planning to submission through implementation and closeout.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to operations management, quality assurance, and regulatory oversight.

  • Ensures that appropriate regulatory approvals are obtained for all research activities as needed (IRB and IACUC), materials transfer/data agreements properly executed.

  • Maintains timelines, track deliverables, and support milestone achievement across multiple concurrent projects.

  • Collaborates with Department of Medicine centralized and divisional teams to successfully complete all stages of grant preparation, submission, and post-award.

  • Works closely with other institutions to submit grant proposals as appropriate.

  • Assists study PIs in the submission of grant materials through eCommons.

  • Works closely with leadership in developing, modifying, and monitoring the achievement
