Description

 

The Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking to hire an intern who will support its Human Rights Division in Central Office Boston. The intern will take the lead in collecting and analyzing data related to human rights complaints within DMH facilities, adult community programs, and IRTP/CYF adolescent facilities and programs. The intern will also be responsible for summarizing collected data and presenting findings to key stakeholders. Furthermore, the intern will compile all data collected by examining each adult facility (units), each IRTP/CYF program (units), and group homes in the community.  Additionally, the intern will participate in the Data Science Program at DMH (DSPD) to develop and enhance their research and analytical skills.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):                                                                                                             

  • Gather, clean, and organize human rights complaint data from DMH facilities and community programs.
  • Develop quality assurance (QA) queries to identify missing or inconsistent information.
  • Work with the OOI team and Community/Inpatient teams to resolve data discrepancies.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of complaint trends.
  • Identify key patterns and insights that can inform policy or procedural improvements.
  • Prepare summarized reports and visualizations for leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Attend weekly DSPD sessions to enhance research and analytical skills.
  • Complete weekly DSPD assignments related to data science and public health.
  • Develop a research project focused on human rights complaints and present findings at the end of the internship.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic proficiency in query languages for QA queries and data validation or willingness to learn.
  • Understanding of data integrity principles and experience with data cleaning.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (Tableau, Excel Pivot Tables) or willingness to learn.
  • Willingness to learn incident reporting systems.
  • Strong attention to detail in identifying data errors and inconsistencies.
  • Critical thinking skills to improve data management and reporting.
  • Ability to maintain an up-to-date data dictionary.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and reporting.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams (HR team, Data Analytics team, Community/Inpatient teams
  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.
