Job Duties

The Blue Ridge Health District (BRHD) is seeking to hire an Environmental Health Supervisor to lead our Food Protection & Sanitation Programs. BRHD is one of 35 health districts within the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). We encompass the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson along with the City of Charlottesville and serve over 250,000 people.

The incumbent will be responsible for performance management, program supervision, program support, and leadership/community outreach & other duties as assigned.

Performance Management: supervise staff, increase performance, provide coaching and guidance; assures all performance management and HR activities are conducted in accordance with federal, state, and agency policies and timelines; identifies barriers to quality – suggests & implements methods to improve accuracy, completeness, consistency, timelines & customer satisfaction; takes measures to adequately implement the regulations of each program; develops positive relationships by managing conflict/personnel problems and gives positive reinforcement; promotes professional development through development plans.


Program Supervision: maintains expert knowledge of program content, serves as resource/mentor and leads staff in implementing program objectives. Establishes priorities and uses judgment in interpretation of regulations for standardizing Environmental Health Specialists. Monitors and evaluates the Food Protection and Facilities Sanitation programs, managing the workload to meet demand. Advises management of situations, which may require their attention. Provides technical expertise for administrative hearings. Evaluates the Food Protection and General Facilities Sanitation programs and undertakes steps to improve services. Assesses need; provide program orientation, education and training for staff. Interact with non-elected local officials & other agencies concerning regulations, policies and procedures; ensures appeals of application denials are handled correctly and within time frames.

Program Support: maintains an assigned caseload of permitted establishments and conducts required, routine inspections, responds to complaints. Acts as lead staff in conducting investigations. Takes appropriate enforcement actions and assures compliance as necessary. Conducts thorough inspections and provides clear communications with owner/operator of inspected facilities. Successfully completes initial standardization within 18 months of employment. Existing staff with current standardizations must maintain standardization in accordance with the requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the technical aspects of the relevant program and ability to provide effective supervision and leadership.
  • Certifications of the Environmental Health Specialist Senior are required if performing inspections or evaluations of that level.
  • The Environmental Health Technical Specialist certifications are preferred but required if performing the duties.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience in Environmental Health Services.
  • Experience and/or ability to provide effective supervision and leadership.
