The primary working location for this role will be Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA.

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Organ Donation Coordinator (ODC) supports the mission, goals, and strategic plan of LifeCenter Northwest (LifeCenter) by evaluating organ donor referrals, conducting medical evaluation on potential organ donors, and developing a plan with the healthcare team to maintain the option of donation. The ODC supports the Organ Recovery Coordinators (ORCs) with organ donor cases, with oversight facilitates donation after circulatory arrest donation (DCD) process, communicates and documents Medical Examiner or Coroner conversations and release for donation. The ODC works closely with the family support team (FS) and ORC to provide family assessment and care. The ODC also supports the operating room by performing organ perfusion and packaging and labeling of recovered organs. 

All these above actions are done pursuant to LifeCenter standard operating procedures (SOPs), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations, United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) policy, and Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) standards.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

A. Response to ventilated referrals

Outcome: All ventilated referral calls will receive a timely and appropriate response.
Assessment: The ODC uses training, experience, and knowledge to evaluate suitability for organ donation. The ODC responds onsite to hospitals in a timely manner when deployed and collaborates with appropriate healthcare team members.
Intervention: The ODC successfully completes all components in response to ventilated referrals as outlined in the SOPs and Work Instructions.

B. Organ donor suitability

Outcome: The ODC independently completes a thorough chart review and onsite evaluation and communicates with the Resource Triage Coordinator (RTC) or Administrator on Call (AOC) to evaluate donor suitability.
Assessment: The ODC uses training, experience, decision trees and knowledge in the identification of suitable organ donors with the guidance of the RTC or AOC.
Intervention: The ODC successfully completes all components to identify organ donor suitability and documents the plan made with RTC or AOC.

C. Identification of Legal Next of Kin (LNOK)and determination of Family Readiness

Outcome: The ODC Independently identifies the LNOK and completes the Family Readiness Assessment (FRA).  
Assessment: The ODC uses resources and training to assist in identification of LNOK, using the hierarchy of document as a resource, and completing the FRA.
Intervention: The ODC successfully identifies the LNOK and proficiently completes the FRA daily on all assigned referrals.

D. Family Support and Interactions

Outcome: The ODC will be proficient in the foundation of family support and associated documentation.  
Assessment: The ODC will use didactic and field training to support a family. This will include but not limited to memory making, supporting a family prior to OR, staying with family after the donor has left for the OR, and all expected documentation of interactions.
Intervention: The ODC will be able to support a family when Family Support resources are unavailable and appropriately document interactions.

E. Clinical and regulatory requirements and documentation

Outcome: All medical and legal requirements will be met prior to organ recovery.
Assessment: The ODC demonstrates an understanding of the legal and hospital requirements for brain death declaration, verifies brain death has been declared with all requirements for organ donation and obtains Medical Examiner/Coroner release for donation.
Interventions: The ODC successfully completes all components of clinical and regulatory requirements and documentation as outlined in the SOPs and Work Instructions (WIs).

F. Medical Examiner (ME)/Coroner Contact

Outcome: ME/Coroner has been contacted for release for donation and proper documentation in LifeCenter's electronic medical record is complete
Assessment: The ODC follows SOP’s and WIs to contact the ME/Coroner about release for donation and effectively communicates in ITX the outcome of conversation. The ODC updates the ORC/AOC appropriately.
Intervention: The ODC successfully contacts and provides all medically relevant information to the ME/Coroner on all cases for release for donation and documents properly in LifeCenter’s electronic medical record.

G. Blood and Ancillary Test Collection

Outcome: Blood samples and ancillary tests during the organ donor case (e.g., HLA, Serology, ABO, COVID-19) are properly packaged, labeled, and shipped. All necessary notifications are made and documented.
