Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose
The Reich College of Education (RCOE) is the designated professional education unit at Appalachian State University. The College offers a broad range of comprehensive degree programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, specialist, and doctoral levels, as well as programs leading to certificates and licensure. The College is committed to providing a well-balanced program of classroom and clinical experiences and emphasizes: programs of rigor and excellence; bold initiatives that address emerging societal needs through innovative programs, teaching strategies, and technologies; the integration of broad perspectives and global awareness across all program areas; the development and delivery of a comprehensive body of knowledge within each discipline; and active engagement and collaboration with communities and stakeholders.
The purpose of this position is to support and advance the mission of the RCOE through strategic leadership in digital teaching, learning, and educational innovation. The Director systematically assesses and responds to program, departmental, and college needs related to instructional technology and digital learning competencies; supports faculty, staff, and students in the effective integration of digital tools, media, and innovative pedagogies; and fosters the development of high-quality, technology-enhanced instruction, research, and outreach. The position oversees the RCOE Media Lab as a hub for digital scholarship, instructional innovation, and media production; provides guidance on emerging technologies and digital infrastructure; and supports planning, resource allocation, and equipment management. The Director collaborates with campus partners to advance institutional digital learning initiatives, contributes to and supports externally funded research and grant development, mentors students and project staff, and promotes interdisciplinary partnerships that strengthen the college’s leadership in digital and technology-enhanced education.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in a relevant field (i.e. instructional technology, instructional design, educational media, instructional systems design, technology or related field) from an accredited university and 10+ years of experience

Preferred Qualifications
- Earned Doctorate in a relevant field (i.e. instructional technology, instructional design, educational media, instructional systems design, technology or related field) from an accredited university and relative experience.
- Evidence of successful teaching or instructional experience in higher education, public schools or professional learning environments.
- Experience facilitating faculty development for the purpose of integrating technology in a variety of settings.
- Experience with emerging technologies
- Skill in applying computer hardware and software and related technologies for educational innovation; experience with mixed platforms.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Experience managing student and related workers.
- Ability to conduct and collaborate on research related to digital teaching and learning, technology integration, and innovation in education.
- Ability to oversee digital learning resources, purchasing, technology planning and equipment inventory associated with Media/Educational innovation lab.
- Experience managing or supporting a media lab, makerspace, or similar innovation-focused environment
- Record of externally funded research tied to educational innovation or technology.
Provide Strategic Leadership in Digital Learning and Educational Innovation
- Lead and support college-wide initiatives that advance digital teaching, learning, and educational innovation
- Work with RCOE Strategic Planning group on initiatives involving digital technologies
- Collaborate with academic departments to integrate digital pedagogies, media, and instructional technologies into programs and courses
- Serve as a liaison with campus partners
- Chair the RCOE Technology Advisory Committee
