POSITION PURPOSE
Whitman College is committed to providing high-quality, comprehensive and relevant personal and professional development opportunities for our students and alumni. Through the work of the Career and Community Engagement Center (CCEC), students access creative and timely programming and resources to help them build connections with our local community and the vast array of options they might pursue during and after their time on campus.
The Community Engagement Coordinator, based in the Career and Community Engagement Center, will support the College’s efforts to develop and support mutually-beneficial partnerships with local organizations in the Walla Walla Valley to create important experiential learning opportunities for students through volunteer programs and other Center initiatives. The Coordinator will foster student leadership development as well as personal and professional development. The Coordinator will work with the Director for Community Engagement to ensure the College offers multiple varied and relevant opportunities for students to learn about, and connect with, “the rich and complex landscape and history of the Walla Walla Valley” (mission statement).
WORK SCHEDULE
This position is 1560 hours per year (0.75 FTE), and can accommodate either 40 hours/week for 10 months (the academic year), or 30 hours/week for 12 months.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Recruit, train, mentor, supervise, celebrate, and inspire student Community Engagement leaders.
- Develop and support relationships with community partners hosting Whitman student volunteer programs and actively participate in relevant networks, meetings and events..
- Support Spanish-English dual language students and volunteers to meet community needs.
- Serve as the Community Service House Advisor - an interest community through Residence Life at Whitman.
- Connect with Whitman students for brainstorms and discussions about community-facing work.
- Lead administrative support for CCEC resources that community engagement programs utilize, such as maintaining the Center’s van.
- Plan and facilitate professional and leadership development workshops, meetings, and retreats for community engagement student leaders and volunteers.
- Collect and report data relevant to community engagement.
- Manage the community engagement programming budget and guide student leaders on utilizing and managing Center resources.
- Attend, participate in and support community engagement events, which will require some weekend and evening hours.
- Support other CCEC priorities.
