Position Summary:

Marathon Petroleum Galveston Bay Refinery has an opening for a Personal Safety Professional located in Texas City, TX.  This position will be the primary safety resource for an operations area team. The Safety Professional is responsible for a wide range of safety activities including program development and interpretation, conducting safety training, auditing, and corrective actions. This position is in the Environmental, Safety & Security (ESS) organization and reports to the Safety Manager.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical support of routine operations, project work, major maintenance or construction support, and emergency response to ensure worker safety throughout the planning and execution phases of work.

  • Supports development, maintenance, and execution of safety programs for implementation in the field to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and conformance to MPC corporate standards.

  • Conducts auditing on safety programs to verify compliance and conformance with regulatory and MPC standards. This includes analyzing safety performance data to identify and report trends, along with proposing recommendations to address areas of concern.

  • Leads and supports investigations for near-misses, incidents, and injuries to identify root causes and recommendations to prevent future incidents. Tracks recommendations to implementation to ensure completion.

  • Develops and presents training material related to a variety of safety topics in collaboration with Operations and Learning Development departments.

  • Provides subject matter expertise for assigned programs, which may include providing input as a competent person for fall protection and excavation safety, support during Life Critical work and input on other regulatory programs.

  • Develops safety related communications for inclusion into shift starter meetings, safety meetings, notices, and bulletins.

Education and Experience:

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required with 6 years of relevant safety professional experience OR Bachelor's degree in related field with 4 years of relevant safety professional experience. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)

  • Must be able interpret OSHA standards, apply OSHA standards and provide OSHA guidance to the site.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

  • A valid driver's license is required.

  • The ability to obtain a TWIC card is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Power BI or similar reporting/analytics system is preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree (or above) in Occupational-, Safety Management- or Industrial Hygiene-related discipline is preferred.

  • More than 6 years of experience in a Safety professional position in the refining or petrochemical industry is preferred.
