Certified Medication Aide (CMA)

Detailed analysis of the position of Certified Medication Aide has been carefully carried out by Administration in order to comply with the provisions and intent of the Americans with Disabilities Act in a manner that is objective and non-discriminatory to people with disabilities.  The analysis accurately identifies and separates essential functions of the job of Certified Medication Aide.  Included in this process is the gathering of information from employees holding this position and then compiling the data, evaluating it, and drawing pertinent employment conclusions that encourage and enhance opportunities for people with disabilities at The Pleasant View Home, Inc.

Supervision:

The Certified Medication Aide must report to the Director of Nursing/Charge Nurse or other person assigned to them at the start of each shift, before leaving the immediate unit, whether on break or for another purpose, and are accountable for designating another employee to monitor assigned duties and/or residents care during the time of absence.  The Certified Medication Aide will report to the Director of Nursing/Charge Nurse or other person assigned to them immediately when there is any change in a resident’s condition, in addition to reporting any pertinent information concerning the resident that would be helpful in planning that resident’s care.

Qualifications:

Must have a certificate of completion of the state-approved course in Medication Administration or be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.  Must have a current Medication Aide Permit or Certification valid in the State of Kansas and be in good standing.

The preferred minimum educational background for CMA is a high school education coupled with college courses.

Recommendations for Training, Skills and Experience:

The Certified Medication Aide will have completed the training required by the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA), plus the state approved training for qualifications for Medication Aide.

The facility prefers Certified Medication Aide to have six (6) months experience working in a nursing home, hospital, home health agency, or other health care facility.

The Certified Medication Aide will meet the minimum age requirements for the State of Kansas.

The following skills needed to perform with or without reasonable accommodation, the essential functions of care giving of this job in the interest of residents.  The ability to:

• Recognize and respond to the needs of residents.
• Make prompt and accurate judgments with regard to resident care.
• Accurately take and record vital signs, including blood pressures.
• Evaluate sensory limitations of residents and adjust care-giving methods to maximize communication.
• Take measures to reduce risk to residents' diagnoses, current condition, etc.
• Observe and assess at the nursing assistant level the physical and psycho-social and safety needs of residents.
• Provides direct care as required.
• Performs special duties as assigned.
• Prepares, administers, documents regularly prescribed medications in accordance with the rules outlined in approved training program.
• Supervises assigned staff and residents in the absence of the Charge Nurse.
• Participate in staff meetings and in-service training as required.
