Job Summary

 

The Center for Advanced Practice (CAP) utilizes a Team Leader model to support its vision of a cohesive, goal-directed Center providing and promoting advanced clinical practice excellence in service and outcomes across the healthcare continuum.  The Team Leader role involves leading and supporting advanced practice providers (APPs) and advanced practice nurses (APNs) to achieve clinical excellence and quality outcomes across the healthcare continuum. This role includes facilitating communication, professional development, and collaboration within the team and across service lines while also participating in strategic planning and decision-making to align with CAP and DUHS goals. In addition to the team lead role, the Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a member of the intensive care team. His/her primary responsibility is the management of a caseload of critically ill complex (multi-organ) patients in an intensive care setting. The APP is under the direct supervision of the ICU supervising physician or designated backup physicians. The APP performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders, schedules laboratory studies, and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, and provides direct patient care services in a specific ICU. The APP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and consulting and provides leadership to the organization and the APP profession.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Complete required leadership training, such as Guide to Managing at Duke, Guide to Managing at Duke +, and other training as requested.
• Be familiar with DUHS and CAP policies and guidelines and utilize resources appropriately.
• Meet individually on a monthly basis with the CAP director for coaching/mentoring. Review, plan, and discuss team successes, challenges, and opportunities.
• Participate as a member of the Leadership Team in overall decision-making, problem-solving, strategic planning, and implementing DUHS and CAP goals/initiatives.
• Collaborate and plan future directions for DUHS and CAP by attending regularly scheduled Leadership meetings and retreats.
• Respond to other leadership directives in a timely manner.
• Serve as a role model and mentor for team members, demonstrating professionalism in conduct, speech, appearance, work habits, customer service, communication style, critical thinking skills, resource utilization, and problem resolution.
• Establish strong, positive, professional relationships with medical, nursing, administrative, and community leaders connected with the clinical service unit (CSU).
• Seek out and participate in learning opportunities related to leadership development.
