30 hp - Impact of surface functionalization on tribological properties of sliding thrust washers

Sliding thrust surfaces are a constant challenge in both combustion and electric powertrains. This project aims to investigate different methods of surface modification to improve friction and minimize wear in such contacts. The thesis is part of a Vinnova FFI project.
Objective
The general objective is to determine which of the surface modifications can be of interest for future implementation in Scania’s powertrains. The techniques include laser texturing, mechanochemical treatment and possibly laser cladding of specific coatings
Job description
The test specimens will be treated by our project partners. The student will develop a testing method after a thorough literature survey. The parts will be tested in Scania’s tribometer test rig using standard test parts. Using optical and electron microscopy the surfaces will be investigated prior and after the tests to study the wear mechanisms. The student will also analyse the friction behaviour.
