Thesis - Identification of correct phase connection based on smart meter data
VattenfallAbout the role
Company Description
At Vattenfall, we have decided to make it possible to live fossil-free within a generation. To succeed, as one of Europe's largest energy companies, we must first become completely fossil-free ourselves. But that's not enough. To contribute to a fossil-free society, we must do more than just focus on sustainable energy production.
Because we believe that to make living fossil-free within a generation possible, we need to look at the challenge from a broader perspective than just producing energy sustainably.
Join us on the journey towards a fossil-free life.

Job Description
Power Climate Smarter Living – that's our purpose. We are looking for talented students who want to help us on our journey towards a fossil-free life. By writing a thesis at Vattenfall, you get a unique opportunity to contribute to our purpose. All we ask of you is to unleash your superpowers and share your energy with us.
About the Thesis:
This thesis will be conducted at Vattenfall´s Research & Development (R&D). Vattenfall R&D is responsible for conducting business driven technical development that creates value for the company and helps us realize our strategy for all Vattenfall’s different business areas: Wind, Nuclear, SKB, Heat, and Distribution.
Subject Area
The society is in the middle of a great transition in the energy system, our energy needs to come from clean sources and be suitable for all types of energy intensive applications, in everything from large scale industry application to electrification of the transport sector and renewable resources. The development of new solutions regarding technical, economic and regulations will play a key role in enabling this transition. The distributed system operators, DSO, have adopt to these changes to provide an electrical network fit for the future.
Vattenfall Distribution is one of the largest DSO in Sweden and has as strategic goal to deliver twice as much electricity with 99.99% reliability by 2030. To be able to deliver on this goal on such a short notice, efficient grid operations and planning is of high importance. Vattenfall Distribution is now installing around 1 million new smart meters at customer sites and in secondary substations. The smart meter technology enables monitoring of energy values and other parameters important for grid operations. By combining smart meter measurements with other data sources, new insights can be gained on a scale not possible before for the local grid, for example correct phase connection of individual customer. By having the knowledge of the correct phase connection enable the DSO to have a better understanding of loading of equipment all the way down to the lowest voltage levels, something that will be increasingly important when more energy is produced and consumed local.
Goals/Purpose
Develop, test and validate a method for confirming correct phase connection based on smart meter data from customer and secondary substation. Also describe and test a method for aggregation of relevant network parameters (e.g. phase current) from customer level to secondary substation level.
This thesis position is for 1 student.
